What Is Up With W4me?

Bought a used W4Me tune & called Jesse today about getting it retuned for my truck. He explained to me that it doesn't matter which octane I am running & that his tune will work with with any of them...87,89, or 91. He told me this after I asked him about a dual octane tune!

I asked about torque management removal (partial removal) & he said that he doesn't remove ANY! Said it doesn't make that much of a difference & mainly helped by making shifts a little firmer.

What the heck? This goes against EVERYTHING that I have ever read about these tunes & what others had gotten done to theirs! :(

Most of his tunes now self adjust to the octane your running. I've been running 92 the last couple tanks it makes a noticeable difference after I had my relearn done compared to running 87. He rightly discourages removing tq. mgt. he'll remove some like he did on my truck, but not all of it. The shifts are very firm almost like a manual banging through the gears under WOT acceleration.

If you keep your foot out of it his tune turns into an economy tune, and if you do a lot of WOT runs and run higher octane it will advance timing and you can feel the truck get faster under the right conditions.

I don t know why people are having trouble gettting ecm s for the nbs trucks, but i have an extra, Make me an offer and I may sell mine.

And to answer your post, just get the waitformetune, you won t be disappointed.

you definetly wont be disappointed, It is an "everything tune". I started running 93 octane and noticed a difference. I didnt remove any of the TM because I want the tranny to last a long time...heheh. Jesse is sending me a TCM to firm up the shifts and make the tranny shift less "sloppy". He is sent it out today. He will sent it to you for free with the tune, but you might have to wait because for the NBS he sends the programmed TCM out and you send him your stock one back. I cant wait to see how it works.

The octane thing is due to the knock sensor in your engine. It will constantly adjust timing to maximize the burn of the fuel you have in your tank. This even works with the stock programed ECM. It works by advancing the timing until the engine starts to ping, than it backs off a little, than advances it again, until it finds the proper setting for the fuel you are running at that time.

Give it atleast 1/2 tank to do its job properly, or go on a nice 30-45 min highway drive with the cruise set at about 55-65. This will allow your engine to run in closed loop mode and everything will set its self up to optimum specs.

Mark, I may be interested in your ECM, do you also have the TCM? I have no idea what these things cost, so I hesitate to make any offers, but let me know what you need for it, ok? I am thinking of getting HP Tuners and I would like to keep my stock one for use (with my Edge) while I play around and learn.

they computer adjusts to the octane that you choose...i used 89 for a while and had no problems even under hard acceleration.....use 93 now.

The internet has blown torque management wwwwaayyy out of portion. It only comes it play for a .0001 of a second between shifts. You can remove it and improve shifting but you'll shorten tranny life, it's similar to popping the clutch on a manual. To improve shift feel he mainly increases line pressure, similar to the tow/haul mode that comes stock on the truck. I didn't have any torque management removed and my 2-3rd shift snaps my head back at 3/4 throttle. There are other factors that come into play during shifts and acceleration that get blamed on torque management, if you really want to open your truck up buy EFILive and go through table by table to change or tweak all the parameters.

On the octane I run 93 all the time, which pays for itself then some. At first I ran a few tanks of each octane to get a base line but when you figure the price per mile 93 wins almost every time, plus there's a noticeable performance increase.

I think most are assuming the WOT delay is Torque Management and maybe that's where the confusion is stemming from. I have heard the WOT delay called "abuse mode protection" as well. Does the Wait4Me tune still remove the WOT delay? Personally I don't like the delay. I want the power there when I ask for it. Although maybe it's keeping me from blowing up my transmission and rear end.

I really like the SCT with 3 different tunes (performance, towing, and economy). I wish Wait4Me had a comprehensive write-up on what each of the different types of tunes focuses on and a brief explanation of what is being changed. I remember finding one from Westers. I think it is in TByrne's post when he announces a sale on Westers tunes.

True, people tend to lump the PE Delay and "Abuse Mode" GM uses into the "TM" terminology. I don't mind TM per se, but I would like to reduce the Abuse Mode parameters so that my truck responds better. The Edge did help this significantly, but not so much from a dead stop. I don't want/need to do burnouts at every launch, but I also couldn't stand it falling on it's face at every take-off either. The throttle lag is not TM, but it will always be thought of that way.

There is more to the throttle lag than just the WOT PE Delay. There is still a delay even at 1/2 throttle. it has to do with GM's Abuse Mode, basically, the computer decides how fast to open the throttle, regardless of how hard you stomp it. In fact, you will get a better launch by rolling the throttle gradually, thereby minimizing how much Abuse Mode kicks in. This is what kills the off-the-line performance, and also enables GM to offer a 100K powertrain warranty. Basically, GM does not allow you to "beat on" the truck...unless you mod it, then it's fixed on your dime, not theirs (assuming they know about it).

There are 3 types of TM that GM uses.

TM Abuse Mode time limit

This is the time in abuse mode as a function of temperature.

%Torque Reduction vs RPM

Torque reduction as a function of RPM.

Upshift Torque reduction

Torque reduction control for each individual gear.

You must disable all 3 to completely remove TM.
