Do I Really Need A K&n

Ok maybe this is going to sound like a really dumb question ... but here goes, I have a 07 sivererado single cab 5.3 and i was going to install a K&N CAI and my Dealer who sold me the truck,and a few other ppl told me that i dont need the whole system they told me to only get the drop in filter, that said i already have a high flow intake or something like that,so are they right or do i need to give $200+ and buy the whole CAI or can i just buy the filter and get the same results.

better off getting a kit by true flow...the k&n is not a CAI because that goofy seal on top does not seal out engine heat. Your sucking in hotter air than your stock air box.

The stock air box pulls in cold air to begin with. The problem is the lung contraption and convoluted tube going to the throttle body. Whatever you go with, stay away from oiled filters. The oil messes things up, like the MAF sensor.

Went with brute fore dry-flow system. I like it. Can also get the drop in OEM replacement dry-flow filters now.

I would agree with both previous posts. Keep your OE box, it is a true cold air system. A K & N drop in will offer little to no benfit and if it is over oiled at the time of cleaing, it can pull the extra oil into the MAF sensor causing your problems.

 

The TrueFlow set up retains the OE box, replaces the tube and they do come with a foam filter that is oiled. However, their oil contains a glue agent and it will not leave the filter. It is extremely tacky which also helps it hold the dirt. I have had a TF set up for just over 2 years and there is absolutely no sign of oil behind the filter. I removed the TF filter and replaced it with a paper filter for about 6 months. I lost about 1 mpg with the paper filter. I now have the TF back in. TF has a great website that will tell you more. I would also suggest looking at the GM Perf Parts CAI. It is a really nice unit that uses a dry filter.

So essentially the entire CAI setup isn't needed just the tube that connects it? Humph that is something I need to look into.

You do not need a K&N filter of any kind. It is a waste of money. The performance and mileage improvement will be in your mind only. Plus contaminated MAF for real.

well i know that the stock tubing is restricting airflow to quiet down the engine and replacing that would really improve airflow.

I replaced mine with an Airaid. But, I did it just for the sound. You're still not gonna pick up much performance, if any. Keep in mind the stock air box is already a CAI.

 

O'ya I'd stay away from oiled filters. It will just screw up your MAF sensor and that WILL cause your engine to run like SH!T.

I might add, before I did any drop in filter today, I would look hard at Amsoil's newest line of premium dry air filters. I think they call them EA Filters. I know the oil filters are produced for them by Wix but I have not been able to confirm this on the air filters.

I ordered one of these yesterday seemed the most logical for me since the stock box has plenty of volume and is cai already. I got mine for $148.
