Sqeak In Reverse ('02 Yukon Xl)

Greetings all,

My '02 Yukon XL sqeaks when in reverse gear. The problem does not happen when in drive, or when you are in neutral rolling backwards. It only happens in gear and in reverse. I have heard this could be u-joints or brake, but assume if brakes were invovled I would hear it when the vehicle was rolling irrespective of whether it was in reverse or not? Is there a fitting that requires lubrication?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - MIke

Thans for the response ....... The mystery for me is why only in gear and only in reverse? The mystery may be my lack of knowledge when it comes to cars and mechanics, but the drive shaft rotate in gear and in neutral as well so it if was a u-joint would it not make the noise in forward, reverse and neurtral?

Also, the vehicle has 62K light miles (no towing), which seems early for u-joints.

Sounds like time to drop about $300 at the local GMC shop for some u-joints!

I cannot explain the reverse thing but you do not hear it in neutral because there is no load being placed on the jt at that point, it is simply turning with the wheels.

I would agree, 26K seems very early for UJts to be going out. I would hope this is not a $300.00 service. :P
