Extra Battery Tray

In the engine compartment. I think it is for a battery - near front. I wish someone would manufature/sell a tool box that would fit right on that empty tray.

It's not a perfect fit but I got a small, cheap, plastic tool box for that spot. It's not much of a tool box, just big enough to hold a tow strap, work gloves and a few basic hand tools. Wanted it removable so ran a bolt into the pre-formed hole in the tray to attach a bungi cord to hold the box in place.

Funny you say that.....last night i had an idea to go to walmart and buy a boat battery box and mount it in the place of where the spare attery goes. They sell plastic battery box that boats use and they have covers and a strap. It sould work perfect!! I'll make mine up this week if i have time and post pics.

Hey!!! You stole my idea!!! Actually, I did post this idea in a similar thread awhile back, but I have not done it yet. After looking closer, I don't think it will be that easy since there is a crossbar above this tray and there is only about 9-10" of clearance, not enough for the marine battery boxes with a cover that I checked out. I suppose if you cannot find a short enough one, you could always cut one down.

Wonder if a metal ammo box would fit? You can find the .50 cal M2 machine gun boxes boxes for cheap at surplus stores, some sporting goods tores or gun shows. They are about 7" high, 11 inches long and 8 inches wide. They have a rubber gasket seal so they are wter tight and have a handle on top. You can lay them on a side if there is not enough height clearance. There is a 7.62x51 M60 mahcine gun ammo box that is about 4" wide that could work too.

Great idea! to the both of you. I'm going to measure the clearance and check out "Smallmart" on the way to the house this pm. Should be just about enough room in one of those for hitch receiver and a few straps and a rag or two. GREAT!

They make really heavy plastic ammo boxes too with the same exact dimensions if anyone is interested. Can pick them up at wal-mart, acadmey, cableas/bass pro etc...

I put an extra battery in the tray and wired it in for my winch.

I didn`t put a tool box in that spot. That`s where I mounted the external transmission filter. I took a per-a-cool aux oil filter mount and put it in line after the trans cooler and am using a PureOne oil filter. I will change it every 6 months when I do oil changes.

Nothing at Walmart except a small utility box w/tray and small parts section in the lid. Well designed <$3, I got 2. Bungie corded one in the battery tray. Put a small pair vice grips, screwdriver and a couple of shop rags in it. Better'n nothin'. Didn't see anything useful in sporting goods.

I picked up a battery box at Wal-Mart. I think it was a group 24 size. It was the smallest they had. It would not quite fit with the crossbar. GM used to make a tool box for the older pickups, but it's no longer available.
