02 Factory Stereo Help

I have an 02 Chevy HD crew cab with the factory stereo/cd with the console mounted cassette player. No Bose, no onstar. 3 of the 4 speakers are virtually dead. I say virtually because if you turn it up and hold you ear close to the speakers, you can hear a faint high frequency output from the so called tweeters. The 6 1/2" units are dead. The only speaker that has normal sound is the driver's side rear.

I first figured it was the radio so I replaced it with one from ebay but that showed the exact same symptoms. I then removed a door panel from a dead door and tried replacing the main speaker with a new after market one I had. Still no sound.

So, is there a connection box under the dash where I could have an open? It seems odd that 3 of the 4 are dead but it doesn't seem like it is the head unit. I don't think this unit has an amp so where should I begin to look?

Thanks.

It will have an internal amp...and it could be cooked...too much bass will cause this.

pull the speakers out and bring them inside and hook them up to a indoor stereo...if they work you know its not the speakers.

than pull the stereo out...the connection at the back could have come loose, or you may have rats...

I had my driver door speaker go out on me when I first got the truck...it would go in and out all the time...never did find out the problem, it fixed its self and has worked for months now. My fave kind of problems are the ones that correct themselves.

I don't think it is the radio. I swapped the original one out for a second unit. It had the exact same problem, only the driver's rear speaker worked. :fume:

Is there a connector or connection block somewhere between the radio and the speakers? Could there be corrosion there? I think I'll try to by pass the factory wiring harness and connect a speaker to the rear of the unit.

2 questions; does anyone have a simple wiring diagram of the radio unit for one of these and can I purchase a factory radio direct plug in harness rather than having to tap into what is already there?

Thanks!

yes you can buy a harness that plugs into the back of the radio .. most stereo shops will have it .. that will give you pig tails to tie into for power and everything to hook the radio up and bypass the factory wiring ...

it has been a while for me ... but i know in the body style just before yours there was a seperate amp ... my step father has the same setup you do .. but his is still working fine so haven't had to go into it ...

what i would recommend ... is pulling the factory radio back out .. and checking the ohm load of each speaker from there to see if you get any funky readings ...

i am sure there is another connector that they go through which would be where the bose amp would normally have been if there isn't an amp on your setup ...
