Rear End Clunking At Stops

Recommended Posts

When ever i put my truck into D or R i get a good clunk that actually makes me in my seat feel like my truck dropped an inch. same thing happens when comming to an intersection and letting off the brake when the light goes green. im thinking u joint? possibly the rear end it self. any ideas. it is a 3.73 rear end ratio. on a shortbox 94 gmc.

Could be excessive backlash in the ring and pinion gears. could be a u joint but you should feel that going down the road. The spider gears inside the diff could be worn out as well. I would check the amount of play in the rear end and while you under their check the u-joints as well.

Usually, but not on every occasion, if the rear end starts to go you would get loud moaning or whining from the gears. I'd go with Mazz and say U-Joint. It would only be $20 or so bucks out of your wallet if it doesnt fix the problem.

Another thing to check is play in the splines at the output of the tranny to the drive shaft.

I can almost guarantee that it is the front spline on the driveshaft. grease it up and you problem will go away.

That's what it was on my 88 and my friends 89. Take the drive shaft off, clean the inside of the yoke real good, with a tooth brush, and lube with a graghite type lube. The sound that you hear is the yoke stiking to the out put shaft. When the rear end loads and un-loads the drive shaft moves in and out on the output shaft.

My truck does this stopping and starting at intersections, etc. I took it to the dealer and was charged $130.00 to grease the slip yoke. It helped for a short time but is doing it again. Should I grease it again or could it be another problem? Don't want to go back to the dealer unless it is covered by drive train warranty. I have a 2007 Sierra NBS with 3.73 rear gear and 5.3 engine. This thing is irritating to say the least. I'm new to the forum and any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would think that would have been covered under the warranty. I'd never go back to them again.

By stopping/starting, do you mean the truck lurches occasionally? If so mine does the same thing when the A/C is on. When the compressor kicks in and the engine idles up, the truck will lurch forward. I fixed it by just pressing harder on the breaks... Not much help I know.

No, when I come to a complete stop I feel a clunk somewhere in the drive line. I thought it was U joints but they seem to be ok and I feel it also when I start from a dead stop. The dealership told me that was under normal maintenance when they greased the slip yoke. I'm also past 36000 miles. I just wondered if anyone else had this problem and how they resolved it. I'll keep working on it and report back. May try U joints anyway. Thanks for your help.

.... I am no transmission expert, but I have some personal experience....... all I can do is tell you this hard clunk on bringing the truck to a full stop at a red light started for me this summer... after a nice easy highway drive on a hot day... the thunk was hard enough for me to tinik that someone had actually bumped their car into the back of me... happened about a dozen times before I got it home...

... when everything was cool the next morning it had gone away, but I took it to my mechanic and asked if it was the 'slip yoke' as you often hear about on this discussion forum... he said no because they always grease the slip yoke as regular maintenance when they do an oil change, so mine would not have been done that long ago... he advised that is was a shift solenoid starting to go and attempted to clean things up wiith a flush.....

well, it was a shift solenoid alright (the first indication of the worn out 4L60E transmission at 210,000 km) ... about a week later the transmission overheated while pulling my travel trailer and spewed trans fluid all over the highway ... I limped it home in 2nd gear and then back to the garage where, after a full examination, they pronounced the transmission totally dead.... all clutches and shift mechanisms worn out and loose pieces in the transmission.... needed a total rebuild of transmission and torque convertor....

..it works great now and I have a 12 month warranty... it has some upgrade parts in it now that are supposed to really improve shifting and performance and so far I am happy with it....

(always keep your transmission in '3' if you are pulling a trailer)

This is good info. Thanks. Yesterday I thought the car behind me bumped me but it was the dreaded "clunk". I only have 53000 miles on the truck but I think I will have the shift solenoid checked. Thanks again.
