Looking For A Class In Welding Or Auto Body Repair

Needing help finding a small welding class or body repair class in the west Houston area. I have looked through the local community colleges in the area and everything they have are full 16 week courses… much to long. I am only wanting a small weekend or two class. Any help would be appreciated.

The way I learned to weld is buy the best MIG welder you can afford, a decent book on welding how-to's, and lots of practice on junk. Good welding takes skill. Once you get MIG down on steels, then move on to other methods and metals.

 

As for the good body work, it takes alot of skill. I learned the basics by working at a body shop for free. The thing is to find someone who "will" teach you and not "use" you for free slave labor.

 

If I had the money, I would still go to a trade school and take their courses. 16 weeks is actually pretty short.

yes I agree, MIG is definetly rather easy to get down butt only a weekend class probably won't help you very much. MIG welding is alot more than just pulling the trigger and watching it go. There is many other factors that you probably want to learn before buying one. I would definetly take a course at a college if you really can or some type of trade school that you would have around your area.

The classes they had at my high school were longer than that.

I already have a Mig and an acetylene torch and for the most part, I am not to bad. Sometimes I have more grinding than I should… The problem with being a self-tought person or tradesman is the bad habits you learn. I think it would be nice to know not just how to do something but to know how to do it correctly. Write now, I do my practices on scrap before I work with the truck and I have read a few books and had a few friends point out a thing or two… I guess I look at it like riding motorcycles for which I have hundreds of thousands of miles on. Still, when I have someone ask me to teach them to ride, I tell them they need to take a class. I don’t want them to learn my bad habits.
