2005 Computer

Hello,

I know this is going to come out as a noob question but here goes. By the way, I have made an attempt at searching this but only came up with 88'-98' or GMT 900 answers.

Where is the computer located in this 2005 Silverado? In my 1995 sierra it was behind the glovebox. The tuned computer that Jesse at wait4me sent to me is a big funny lookin animal and I don't recall anything jumping out at me under the hood that resembles it. Thanks for your help.

One other part. I need to have a crank re-learn done right? It's scheduled to go in for an appointment at the local dealership and I was thinking of asking the tech there to do the re-learn but only if its necessary.

Under the hood. Left front just behind the radiator. There should be a big black cover over it. And yes you need the crank learned.

thanks a lot sparkstech! I think i know the spot. Can I install it at home and drive the few miles to the dealership without wrecking something if the crank relearn isn't done right away?

well 2000, as I understand it (from the instructions given to me by wait4me) the computer uses the crank sensor to detect a misfire or something to that effect. Without the relearn, the truck won't know that it misfired until the relearn is done.

As of right now, I finished installing the new computer. Started the truck in the garage and it idled away nicely. Now I'm gonna go for a spin to see how it handles. Tomorrow morning its off for the crank relearn.

As for the install, the part I liked least was those orange gaskets that surround the two harnesses. At first I tried installing the gaskets from the old computer straight onto the metal rims of the new computer. That didn't work so well. It then came to me to place the gaskets onto the harnesses first and then connect the harnesses to the computer. I hope they sealed.

Ok cool, thanks. What all is involved with the crank relearn (what does the dealer do, plug it into a computer and reflash something etc...?)

Yea the gaskets go on the harnesses first. As for the crank relearn almost every vehicle has some slight variation in the distances between sensor and reluctor ring and every reluctor ring is bound to be a little different. So you need to program the computer to the specific variation for that vehicle. Not a big deal to do. We just plug in the Tech-2 bring it to operating temp go to the crank relearn procedure and snap the throttle the pcm does the rest. Without it all hell will not break loose but I have chased false missfires because someone before me didn't relearn the crank. You can get a check engine light with a false miss without it but not usually. Hope that answered the question.

That made good sense. Thanks sparkstech for the info. I had the relearn done this morning and after 30 miles so far so good.
