Sea Foam

:) Hey, I just picked up two pint sized cans of Sea Foam (half of one for the engine, a whole one for the gas tank) and need to know where I pour them in. I can just dump the can into the gas tank, right? Now, from what I understand, it's easiest to pour it through the brake booster line for the engine. Where would this be on a Vortec 5700? A picture with the line circled would be of GREAT help. Thanks!

I think I might just end up answering my own question. I already poured one can into the tank, and think I know what the brake booster line is, but I wanted to make sure, first. Here are two pictures I made of what I think is it. :D

So do I just pull off that tube and SLOWLY pour half a pint down it with the engine running, then cut it off for around five minutes before recranking it? Thanks for anyone who can answer that! :D

Well thats the brake booster alirght! If you hold that hose up to the bottle you will want to make sure that it takes a little at a time. Cause that brake booster will suck that seafoam down like it was jello. If I can remember if you put a lot down the engine might cut out!

 

Actually what I did with my truck is I put about half bottle of sea foam down the brake booster and the other half I through down the throttle body trying to choke it out that way. Hope that when I poured it down the throttle body that the sea foam spread through the engine and then I let it soak for about 10-15 minutes to let it soak!

Yeah, that's what I've heard. So how can I get it into the throttle body easily? From what I hear you have to drill a small hole and use a straw to get it in there. It'll still clean the same area of the engine regardless of which of those two ways you put it in, right? I guess it won't clean the throttle body by putting it down the brake booster line, either, but there isn't really much to be cleaned in there, is there? Thanks, man! :D

Well, all you got to do is take your air box off and dump it down the throttle body. I mean you got that stuff in your gas tank, that in of itself will help you out!

Doesn't the air intake tube go upwards somewhat from the air filter to the throttle body, though? I'll have to take a look at it tomorrow.

I cant remember what mine looked like but I have a k&n right now! I think that your system had a tube that hooks up to a whole in the fender... maybe? The throttle body sits right there on top of the intake and you want to remove that tube from the top of the engine.

Ok I remember now! If you are standing in front of your truck you have the big box where your air filter is in and than there is your mass air flow sensor... I think that you can disconnect the tube from the throttle body and mass air flow sensor and dump the sea foam down the throttle body. Than you wait and when the time has past you start it up and it will blow smoke like crazy. should be fun and than you rev it up to get all that smoke and sea foam out and put it all together you should be good!

You can certainly use the Brake Booster Vacum line but just do as BLK Chevy said, let it go in pretty slowly. Too much at a time could possibly hydro lock a cylinder. This means you have allowed too much liquid into the cylinder and liquid does not compress. Not a good thing and would likely end with a bent rod or busted piston. Just let it pull in slowly.

 

Also know that using this line will allow the SF to take the path of least resistance. This means the couple of intake runners and cylinders that are closest to the vacum hose will receive most of the SF.

 

I am not really familiar with the intake tube on the 5.7 but if you pull your intake tube off the TB and run the engine, you could set a code. You can drill a hole in the intake tube and use Deep Creep, SeaFoam aerosol. You injest it into the TB through the hole with the straw that comes with it making sure the straw does not come out of the can. Then plug the hole with a sheet metal screw. This allows the SF to get into all cylinders equally.

I would do this prior to an oil change, and let it sit overnight before starting it. You will need to change oil after you're done. If you have older spark plugs (or newer ones sometimes), the oil and gunk that the seafoam brakes up will get into your cylinders(it is supposed to) and will foul your plugs, so watch for that. Also, be sure to blow all of it out of your engine by running the truck up and down the street at full throttle accelerations(don't brake the law, though) It will take a good number of revvs and runs to get all the smoking finished.

 

Make sure you use the PCV system to put in the seafoam. The brake booster is a great location. If there is no PCV hose going into the intake in the front area, just put the whole can in the booster line and let it sit-you will be amazed at how much better it will run after this treatment, but the key is letting it sit overnight and letting the seafoam get into the cylinders to clean out the piston heads and the intake valves.

Okay, I'll do that, thanks. I think I'll do 1/4 of a pint in the throttle body, 1/4 in the vacuum line, as it says add 1/2 pint one way or another, so I don't think I'll need more than that just because I'm putting it into the same place from two different directions (so to say), plus I want to save 1/4 of a pint to put in my ATV's tank, then the rest for anything else I might need it for...

Yeah, I'll be sure to do it nice and slowly. I've already bought the two cans of Sea Foam now, I guess I should have read up more and gotten one can of both Sea Foam and Deep Creep instead. I want to use this can of Sea Foam if at all possible because it wasn't cheap and I don't want to have to drive all the way back across town to take it back and get a can of Deep Creep instead. Is there any way I can use this through the throttle body instead of the brake booster hose instead, since it'll work better than way and I guess clean the throttle body as well? Thanks!

From what I've heard from most others, you only have to change the oil after using Sea Foam in the oil, and that the build up shouldn't usually get into the oil. So are you sure about this (not questioning your experience)? Also, is it really that necessary to let it sit that long? It says 5 minutes on the can and most others say 15-20 minutes, I've never heard hours before... :fume:

    • My brother has an Escalade. The warranty has expired so he told his wife to go to the Valvoline quick lube he uses some times. They told her if her car was a 2020 and newer 6.2 engine they wouldn’t touch it. Hers is a 2019, so they did the oil change.
    • The oil filter has NOTHING To do with oil leak. GM sources parts from 1,000's of vendors and as with anything mass produced, flaws are unavoidable.    Putting a larger oil filter will do nothing but satisfy emotions. The OEM filter is designed for the engine and perfectly capable of handling the demands on the engine. Oversize oil filter could result in reduced flow and overall lower oil pressure.

That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
