Abs Controller

Got into my truck to leave work the other day & started to here a loud humming noise. (1st thought was... oh no fuel pump!). Got under the truck & found what I believe is an ABS controller (module with a couple of electrical connectors & multiple brake lines connecting to it) which was making the noise. Shut the truck off pulled the key out & the freakin thing continued to run & make the humming noise. I ended up pulling one of the electrical connectors to get it to stop.

The question I have is this in fact some sort of ABS controller (it's mounted on the frame under the drivers side door)? And what do you think the cause may be? Is it painful to replace? Just looking for some assistance thanks.

It is a very common problem and yes it is the ABS pump.

 

There is a guy on Ebay that sells a remaned unit for a couple of hundred dollars in comaprision to the stealer who wants 1000 +.

Definitely sounds like the ABS pump. They typically make a noise when they run. Although you may not be able to hear it, the ABS does a self-test everytime the engine is started and the truck is put into gear and drives at anywhere from 2-4MPH.

 

Did you get an ABS warning light? Did the DIC show any message? By removing power from the unit, you lose the ABS feature of the brakes but the service brakes will still work.

 

ABS controllers are expensive, but I just can't see buying a reman from fleaBay regardless of the cost savings. Dealer prices are horrible so you might check with a reputable auto repair shop to get an estimate on repairs. There is much more to replacing the ABS unit than simply swapping out parts. For example, you need to bleed the ABS system once a new pump is installed. That requires a GM Tech II Scan Tool or other similar device to run the ABS pump so that brake fluid will pass thru and fill the lines. IMHO, this is a job for an experienced mechanic.

My 99 did the same thing. Only cost me $1000 at the dealer.

You can probably get a good used one from a wrecker for about half price of new.

No I have not seen any type of ABS indicator on the DIC. Just got a red brake indicator light on the dash. Could be from me just unplugging the pump I guess. So it takes more than just a standard bleeding of the brakes after pump replacement? Thanks for info.

Had the same problem. Ebay guy did great job for 200.00 bucks. Highly recommended. no problems and perfect anti lock since.

Since the brakes still work regardless of the ABS module, I'd take my chances on the eBay unit. 800$ is 800$.

Search ABS under my user ID, or search Modulemaster... Save you a ton of $
