Transfer Case Matched To Vehicle

Hello,

Can you comment if there is a way to match a specific part number or serial number (like a transfer case) back to the original vehicle it was installed on? I think that a mechanic may have change my transfer case out of my suburban while it was in for steering work. I had driven the vehicle a few days before on a long highway trip with no problem. I delivered the vehicle to him for steering work and he called me later that day to say the steering work was complete, but the transfer case was in rough shape. I have since had the transfer case repaired for $2700 at another shop.

 

The original mechanic doing the steering work had a suburban 1500 series, mine is a 2500 series. I would like to investigate if it is possible he swapped his transfer case for mine during the 8 hours I had the vehicle in his shop.

 

I know it all sounds crazy, but i need to ease my mind by doing some light investigation.
