Rims Rated For How Much Weight? Need Help

I have a 2004 3500 srw......it comes with 7in steel wheels (2500 come with 6.5in wheel).......anyone know what the weight rating is for this rim? I have some aftermarket rims that are rated for 3420#'s apiece.......I assume the steel is rated higher but I'm about to purchase a 30' gooseneck equipment trailer (about 5500#'s)......curious if maybe I need to put my stock rims back on or keep the aftermarket ones......thanks Chris.

Many alloy wheels actually have higher load stress ratings than their steel wheel counterparts. I do not know about your particular wheels, but aftermarket alloys are usually rated higher than steel. Yours are rated at almost 7000 lbs per axle. They should be more than enough. Keep in mind that much of the actual trailer load will be on the trailer wheels even with a gooseneck hookup.

called my local stealership and asked them the above question.....their response "sir those rims are only come in 6.5" my response no they don't I have the rims in the back of my truck and they are 7.....their response "no sir they only come in 6.5's" my response I'm looking at the factory 7 inch rims......their response sir.....well you get the point......why can't I get a good answer....any help would be appreciated thanks.....Chris.

In the interest of accuracy the 2004 3500 SRW came in a 16x6.5 (RPO PY2 chrome) and 16X7 (RPO QC1 silver paint) for steels, no alloy offered. If you have the original wheels on this truck and the dealer ran the VIN he would be telling you what the build sheet shows. If he didn't know your VIN he is ignorant of all the possibilities. My reference is Hollander Interchange Manual, 73rd Edition.

 

OE Mfgrs. seldon if ever, publish wheel weight ratings. Your maximum load stated in the door jamb will be well within the rating for OEM supplied wheels. It is unlikely that the wheel rating is the defining factor of the vehicle's max load rating. A 5500# trailer probably wouldn't add a ton to the rear wheels of this truck. Certainly no problem for 7000# rated rear wheel pair.

maybe I'm just over cautious......but I have two sets of rims and want to put the "best" pair on. This is the trailer I ordered it's not the biggest but it's the biggest I've ever towed and I just want to do it right.....I figure if I do it right my pin weight should never exceed 1500-2200#'s well within the range of the stock or aftermarket rim but I just want to know which is the best rim.

Nice outfit you've got there Chris. I wouldn't think that there would be dime's worth of difference between the different wheels. With a 1-ton load you're overspec'ed either way.

Make sure you know the rating of the alum. wheels if they are after market. There are many that wont be rated to 3000lbs. Mark.

If you wanna really be cautious, the rear axle of a 3500 isn't rated to carry anywhere near 6000 lbs. The wheels are stronger than it is. It's basically a 2000 lb load vehicle (plus truck weight) with 6000 plus lb wheels (per pair). As long as you have E rated tires, all should be good. Remember that the goose neck is pretty good at weight distribution compared to a bumper hitch.

 

Nothing wrong with being cautious but I think you have it pretty well covered as long as you don't overload that trailer.

EDIT: I was misinformed on the rating. I have since seen the correct info on them. I still stand by the fact that the weight distribution of the gooseneck hitch will negate any worry about the wheels.

My 2500 rear axle is rated at 6084lbs. The axle its self is rated higher but is limited by the tires. The 3500 axle is I believe, rated above 7000, but tires are also the limit. That is why GM finally offers 265 tires on 3500s. The 1/2-3/4and 1ton is meaningless today, except to identify models. Mark.

This is true, Mark.

 

WOW... I misread the GM website. A properly equipped 2500 is rated at about 3800 lbs payload. A 3500 up to 5300 according to GMC. Sorry for the misinformation.

 

I do agree that the tires will be the limiting factor. My point was really that the wheels were not going to be the main item to worry about. :eek:

I went out and looked at the stickers on my 2500HD. The max payload is 2,915 lbs including passengers and cargo. Front axle is rated for 4,200 lbs and the rear for 6,084 lbs. The tires, rated at 3,195 lbs at 80 PSI will support the max weight for the rear axle.

 

Some of the guys who haul big campers (the slide-in kind that are actually carried in the truck bed) run 19.5 inch wheels with tires that can carry huge loads for an extra margin of tire safety. There is information here: http://www.ricksontruck.com

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
