I purchased a 96' 5.7L 4x4 yesterday-- when I went out to start it this morning, it makes a VERY loud ticking noise.

It was -10F outside-- I gave it 5-10 min to warm before I drove it. It was still ticking very loud... oil pressure is normal ~60psi or more while that cold.

I drove it 10 miles before the noise faded-- the noise got faster with the engine speed. It sounds like it is coming from the driver side of the engine more than the passenger side.

Is this normal? I have an 01' 5.3L tahoe that is a bit noisy, but clears up in <3mi.

What could it be? I think lifters... but for 10 miles? I was going ~55-60, if i turned the heater on High, the noise is very faintly.

sometimes an exhaust leak by the manifold can sound like a tic.....crank it up and stick ur hand in there and feel for any exhaust leaks. its the cheapest place to start hehe

definitely not an exhaust leak-- i checked, but it would not go away when the engine got to 200F ---

I started it at 35F in the garage this morning and it still ticks-- just not for quite as long-- about 10 min or 3 miles.. :) ???

get a mechanics stethiscope and start poking around on the block and heads till u can zero in. theyre pretty cheap. even a long prybar or screwdriver will work to an extent

I took it into the dealer today-- it needs some new hydraulic lifters (so they are doing all of them) and an intake manifold gasket-- so much for buying used and saving  , but at least the selling dealer gave it a 1000 mi /30d warranty  $1350 to fix.
