Anybody With A Painted Gmc Grille Logo?

Im thinking about painting the red GMC logo on my Sierras grille white to match the paint.

Here are my questions:

How does it come off?

Will a flying rock destroy the paint?

Will sanding/paint/clear be fine?

Are they seperate letters or just one piece?

I know a guy that can paint good, but will these little letters be a waste of time?

Thanks.

There is a member around here somewhere who painted his black. Maybe he will chime in soon.

That'd be Mod Crazy - he's around here somewhere. His truck looks niiiiiiice.

I painted the GMC on my Sonoma (R.I.P.) and the bow tie on my Monte Carlo (R.I.P) to match the body color (both were red from the factory). Piece of cake. Didn't take either one off the car. Just masked them off (and a good portion of my hood), sanded them with 400 grit wet/dry, sprayed two coats of base and four coats of clear. Looked like they were done at the factory.

I took mine off today; it's sitting in my kitchen awaiting paint. I don't know how the older trucks are, but on the GMT900s the GMC logo (I assume the Chevy bowtie is similar) comes off by pushing in four tabs located behind the grill on the back of the logo. You need to remove the plastic shroud that covers the radiator to access this area. It's not too difficult, although the tabs on the bottom can be a pain in the butt.

Cool!

So you managed to tape around the chrome plastics allright? thats the only downside I see with that. I will have to take a closer look at that when I go outside tomorrow.

Also, Ive got a billet grille that sits almost flush with the emblem, but I dont think that matters.

Im just worried about a rock hitting it and cracking the clear, like what happend on my friends ford.

Thanks for the info.

I replaced my ugly gold bowtie with a billet aluminum one and it looks good (black truck). But, now that my factory one is just sitting around I may try painting it black and putting it back on. I think that would look even better than the all silver look.

The bowties just have 2 clips behind them, and I did not have to take the plastic shroud off to reach it. Depends on the size of your forearms probably.

I blacked out my grille emblem within 4 hours of owning mine. I did mine with black vinyl from my sign shop (3M Gloss Black Scotchcal vinyl)! You could go to nearly any sign shop in your area and ask them for a piece of "scrap" large enough to cover the GMC and they'll probably give it to you if not REALLY cheap (I wouldn't give them more than $5 if they do want to charge...it's about $0.25 worth of product).

Then just clean it up good...peel the backing off the vinyl, rub it over the red plastic lettering...you'll then be able to see the edges of the GMC lettering quite clearly. Then take a good sharp Xacto knife, and gently slide it along the edges of the letters cutting away the excess black. Then take a credit card or similar and push the vinyl into the crevices (beveled edge of the plastic lettering) and you're done. Took me baout 20 minutes. I also did the small GMC on the tailgate...but them dumped it and put on the DENALI lettering like my doors.
