2003 Silverado 1500 Fuel Filter Change

I changed my second fuel filter tonight. For the second time, I got drenched with fuel. I am still not relieving the pressure properly. I removed the filler cap and then relieved the pressure at the Schrader valve under the hood. Once I got the second fitting loose, the pressure relieved out the rear of the filter and went everywhere.

I see from a search that others are pulling the fuel pump relay from the underhood fuse box. Do you just pull this out to remove it? I've never removed a relay and want to be sure I don't do any damage. I want to keep from getting the fuel all over me next time.

Thanks for any help,

Removeing the pressure from the fuel line will not remove the fuel in the line. You will always have fuel come out when you disconnect the fuel line. The only reason to remove the pressure is so fuel does not spray all over the place cuase a fire or in your eyes. Removeing the relay does nothing except keep the fuel pump from turning on if someone would happen to turn the key on.

Example: Shake up a soda it builds pressure open the cap removes the pressure but the soda is still in the bottle.

The underhood fuse box is where the relay is located. One of the relays there is for the fuel pump. It will show you on the fuse box lid on in your owners manual which one it is. It pulls out just like a fuse
