Hot Coil Smell

This is started yesterday afternoon, but I am smelling a hot coil. For those with ladies (or you ladies) it smells just like a really really hot hair dryer. Kinda like hot plastic and metal.

 

I smell it in my truck when I turn the defrost on and when I get outside my truck it just reaks of the odor.

 

I plan on calling my dealer this morning and seeing what I can do abuot taking it in.

 

Oh, and when I am outside my truck, it seems the smell is coming from those intakes/vents right next to the wipers.

Have you considered the possibility that something might have gotten on a hot exhaust pipe? I had a plastic bag fly up and stick to the Y pipe on my Blazer once and it was days before the melted plastic smell went away.

i thought about that, but I looked under my hood and couldn't see anything and I really don't have a good spot at the homestead to get under my truck and look at it.

 

If I find a nice flat spot this weekend (that isn't covered in 8" of snow) I will try to crawl under it and take a look.

 

But why would the smell only be coming out of those vents on the hood? If it was just a bag I should be able to smell it in the wheel wells and under the hood, but I can't, only at those vents.

Coincidentally noticed the same thing just as I got out of my 07 classic last night after running the heat & defrost on max trying to keep my cold-natured wife warm. She usually doesn't ride in the truck and so I usually don't run it anywhere near max heat. I figure its not hurting anything , kind of like you said ... just like a hair dryer isn't hurt when it heats up and the metal and plastic naturally smells.
