G80 Problem?

2007 GMC Sierra 1500 2WD Crew Cab (G80 option)

I took my truck this week to a local 4x4 shop to have my gear swapped from the factor 3.42 gears to 4.10 GM gears. When they took off the differential cover and the mechanic noticed that a bolt in the carrier unit appeared to be loose to the point that it moved to a magnet. They described the bolt as being the one that holds the pin that goes between the spider gears. According them that does not appear to be normal and usually indicates a broken bolt or worse.

They suggested that I have it looked at by the dealer before they worked on it to avoid any warranty issues. They put the cover back on and were nice enough to not charge anything for the labor, differential oil and friction modifer.

So...my question it this normal or something wrong?

That is why I was asking. I have not noticed any noises or anything else out of the ordinary.

I guess you can't tell when the carrier bolt worked loose or became broke, but has your G80 been doing its job?

I don't know because I don't lock up the wheels on a daily basis. This is my daily driver with occasional trips to construction sites during work. I guess I need to try to test it somehow.

Being that I am in Georgia, there isn't any snow or ice and with our dry spell I would be lucky to find a puddle. Any suggestions of how I could test it at home?
