Traded the 04 2500HD 6.0

Picked up an 06 2500HD D/A

Thank you to everyone that answered all my questions about the 8.1 and the used vehicles I have researched.

On a serious note, I am completely new to the diesel world. Any tips or tricks?

Tip one would be to level out those mirrors. here

Tip two would be check out the diesel place, they can answer anything related to the D/A combo.

Tip about diesels:

Make sure you keep the fuel filters clean. Be careful where you get the fuel. If you accidentally pump diesel with substantial quantity of water (not common but happens) into your gas tank, you could possibly ruin your engine.

How do I know when it is time to change the fuel filter? Does the DIC tell me? I contacted the dealer yesterday because the owners manual is missing the duramax supplement and the regular manual covers nothing about maint.

The DIC monitors the mileage and give a percent of life (15,000 miles), but you should carry a few spares just in case. The biggest problem is water in the fuel limiting engine power, switching out to a new filter will solve the problem.

Don't use Fram. Always go OEM or Fleet guard, no matter what filter you're replacing.

I agree, I NEVER use fram. I use wix, also make suer you always prefill your filters. When you replace your fuel filter make sure you use the primer button if yours dosent have the electric primer.

Congrats on the truck. Once you get a Duramax, you won't go back. Buy your filters in bulk. Change the fuel filter every 10,000. Also check the air filter quite often. Besides that, drive it like any other truck. If you decide to tow anything, prepare to have that grin turn into a smile.

I see you switched colors also. You will be happy with that too. Much easier to keep clean.
