Got Stuck In Some Mud :(

I was out at the lake yesterday and was about to leave, until I got stuck in some mud / really wet grass (trying to turn around to get back to the gravel road)...

I have a 2006 Ext. cab Silverado 5.3 V8 2WD Hybrid with stock tires and rims. At the time I had about 500-600 lbs of sand in the back, which probably didn't help the cause. I could just not get any traction once my tire treads were full of mud, and didn't have the assistance of the front wheels to help me out. I tried going into 2nd gear, emptied a bag of sand near the tires, etc...but nothing helped, just kept digging deeper.

So, my question is, what if anything can I do to my current truck to maybe help this from not happening. I have not ruled out buying a 4WD truck, but if there are some options w/ my current truck, I am all ears!

Thanks :chevy:

PS: I've also had similar issues in the snow...

I would maybe try a new set of tires. I suggest BFG All-Terrains...I have always loved them.

Easy....Add a rear locker, such as an Eaton G80.

Just pulled out my window sticker..would this differ from the locking differential that was installed in the "Light Duty Power Package"?

Is the RPO code "G80"? if so, then nevermind. :chevy: Were both rear wheels spinning? If not, then your G80 is busted. If so, then you were REALLY stuck and you need 4wd.

Both tires were spinning..is the RPO code easy to find? Thanks.

Look at the sticker glued in your glove box, see if there is a 3 digit code that says G80

My current tires are 235/75R16's... what would be a good size if I were/able to upgrade them?

It is confirmed that I have a G80. Thanks.

NikeMan, you can keep the same tire size unless you really want to go bigger. Just switching from the stock all-seasons to a more aggressive but road-friendly all terrain (BFG, Bridgestone Revo, Firestone Destination, etc.) will make a huge difference.

Mud sucks. You could get some of those temporary tire chains that strap around your tires. I have 4x4 with rear locking diff but have the stock all terrain tires. If the tread gets clogged with mud your screwed, especially if you have to go up hill. I agree with others, better tires. The G80 helps when I have momentum, but starting out from a stopping point when I am stuck it does not seem to help at all.

There's your problem... get better tires.

Yeah, I'm starting to realize that...I have 235/75R16 on my truck, and the next closest size in the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO are 245/70SR16. Would those work alright? They are really close in overall diameter and revs per mile, and are in the right rim width range.

That exact same thing happened to my friend in his Ford last night, and of course I had to come pull him out, and pull the truck home when it wouldn't start... :chevy:

I agree that tires would be good. Take a look at the Nitto Terra Grappler and the Toyo Open Country AT also, they're both good on and off road.
