95 C2500 Fuel Problem

95 chev

Hello just joined,

I have a 1995 chevy c2500 5.7 cid TBI. I have been having a problem for about 6 months with starting. At different times (mostly after the truck was warmed up) it would crank for about 5 to 8 seconds before it would start. Sometimes I didn't think it would start, but it aways did. On Friday, I came home from work, and had to go back out. When I started the truck it died right away (it never did that), it did it once more, and then it finally stayed running but was very rough at first and then the engine raced for a few seconds before returning to normal.

I asked my nephew about it (he is a diesel mech.) and on his advice I replaced the fuel pump. After I replaced the pump I started the truck and it seemed to run fine, but I still have to check the hot starting issue. But now when I start off at a light and I'm giving it gas to get moving, it spits and sputters untill it gets to normal driving speed and then it smoothes back out. But if you jump on it to pass someone, it starts to spit and sputter again until you take your foot out of it. Does anyone have any ideas on what my problem could be? I guess I should have investigated the problem more before I changed the pump, but my nephew seemed sure that the pump was my problem. By the way, The new pump is an AC-Delco unit. On a side note, When I had the pump and sending unit on the bench and was changing it out, I ripped the strainer trying to get it off. Of course by the time that happened the dealer was closed, so I had to go to Auto Zone to get a new strainer. Why wouldn't they include a new strainer in the pump kit? The directions inside the pump kit even tell you to get a new one. And why didn't the parts guy suggest the strainer when I bought the pump? I was so pissed when I ripped the old strainer that I had to walk away for a few minutes so I wouldn't throw the whole sending unit against the wall. Thanks for any help...Joe.

Well, Thanks for the responses, I am embarrassed to say that the problem was the fuel filter. I put a new one on today and the problem is gone. power is back and no hesitation. :banghead::lol::eek:

Also check the return line coming off fuel pump. If this is pinched I could give you the issues you are describing.

do you mean the rubber portion of the return line between the line on the tank and the line on the frame? Thanks for your response.
