Difficulty Shifting Into 4 Lo

I have an '03 K1500 Silverado with 96,000 miles. I had a guy interested in buying it and wanted to test drive it. I have only engaged 4 wheel high twice and 4 wheel low once- all off road. So we were in a parking lot he engaged 4 wheel high with no problem. Then when he shifted back into 2wd it seemed like it didnt wanna come out. So we backed up a few more feet and it finally disengaged. Then he put the truck in neutral and tried to put it in 4 wheel low. It made a grinding noise. Then I put the truck in park and it went in. I looked in a manual and it said that driving on pavement for a period of time could cause the driveline torque to not let the transfer case shift. Did all this happen because of the pavement?

That is quite possible.

I also have an '03 LS-4.8K15rado, with only 30.6K miles.

 

I experienced exactly the same scenario last fall.

 

I usually try and use the 4x's year round..you know to try and keep them in shape...Like runnin' the air in the winter..Brrrrr.

 

My 4Lo experience.....

Tried in D...The worst

Tried in N...Wanted to but didn't

Tried in P...After moving a few feet to 'an fro...finaly in.

 

One other cure...

Shut trk down, wait............at least 30sec.

Restart, leave in P, then put into 4Lo. Then Go....

 

 

Have yet to investigate whether or not it's related to some thing else.

i finally talked to my friend that works for a dealer today.... he said he wasn't sure but it could be a sensor. anyway thanks for the help

The transmission has to be in Neutral in order to shift the transfer case in and out of low range...Sometimes it's better to try shifting it while the truck is moving slightly so it locks up quicker.

i've had three full size 4x4 GM's and i know that shifting into 4 hi is supposed to be somewhat "on the fly". i've shifted this truck into 4 lo once(when the truck was in neutral) and it worked fine. but i was also off road. so i don't know what it could be. just trying to see if it's something major or not
