Code Readers

Hi there,

Question: which type of on board diagnostics does my truck have.....? 2001 Tahoe 4wd 5.3ltr.

I assume it's obd II, but i'm not sure....

Is there anyone out there that has had good or bad experience with aftermarket code readers?

My truck is throwing up a bunch of codes and i don't want to end up paying a fortune to have them all pulled and erased everytime.....

Any suggestions are very welcome.

Yup, OBD II. I've used the Actron brand to read and reset codes without any problem. Autozone around here loans them out. I've seen them for sale at Pep Boys and on Ebay.

If you have a laptop, I recommend using it with a nice package like http://obd-2.com/ (converter plus software). When I changed my intake gaskets, I wanted to be able to read the camshaft retard (baseline setting for distributor). My vehicle was not listed on this website, I emailed to ask about it, the author added my vechicle to the list. This allowed me to get the enhanced data for my vehicle which included the camshaft retard (which the scanners mentioned about do not have). It also allows clearing of codes, etc which most of the hand scanners do. Of course, if you do not have a laptop....

good luck!

Sounds interesting....Any chance this works on a Mac.....?

If not, i'll make do with a simple read/ reset tool. They're not too expensive overhere.

Thanks for the replies, Mick D.

I used this for 7 years on my 01 Tahoe. It worked great for what I wanted...reading/resetting codes. I believe it only works on windows and it needs a serial port which some newer laptops don't have. I was very happy with the price/performance.

I went with EFILive for my new Denali. Much more expensive but I can tune and look at much more with it.
