12 Volt Air Compressors

Ok here is the deal, I would like to have a 12volt air compressor to cary to top off my tires when needed ( I currently live in an appartment and i'm on the 3rd floor so having a 120votl compressor for this is kind out of the question untill I buy a house) but it would also be nice to have one when I'm gone camping. I have been looking around and I want to find one that does not take 10mins to top off a tire. I found this one

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Disp...temnumber=93186 at harborfreight and the price does not seam too bad, any one have a 12volt compressor like this that have worked well? If so what brands do you guys have? I have seen a really nice Waren one, but at over $200 a bit more than i want to spend for a small air compressor.

your saying an air compressor that runs off a 12volt batterie? never seen one but I would imagin they all would take 10 mins + to fill 10 PSI.. I got one that plugs into my cigarette lighter works pretty well, just loud and takes awile to fill air.. works though.. this might be exactly what u want.the only thing I don't like about it is if u leave the pump on its blows the fuse when pluging it in... duh. I'm sure u can find one at sears for under 60$

I clicked on your link after I made my first reply. the one in the link looks really nice, a lot better then my rinky dink. iv had mine for about 3 years and it does the job so I can't complain.

I know it could be a pail to hook it up to the batt. everytime, but the fact that it has a 30 amp motor makes me think it will work alot better than one that pluges into the lighter port. Also the all metal construction and the 11lbs weight makes me think it will last for some time.

But I;m with you I am very pickey about my tire pressure and hate going to a gas station to fill up my tires, the only one around that if free is way of of my way, and I have never like all the water I can get to come out of the hose when it 1st starts running.

I think I'm going to go to Harbor Freight today and pick one up, for $50 it is not much more than some of the cheapos I have seen.

If I didn't already have this one.. I would do the same thing.

I will keep that one in mind in case this one quits on me.

I have a Campbell Hausfeld pump that I bought some years ago. I use it for autocross and track days. It plugs into the cig lighter and I can add 5-7 psi in about 1 1/2 minutes. It's small enough to keep in a small tool bag along with a dial pressure gauge.

One other thing to look at is a battery "jumper pack" with air compressor. They will jump-start a car with a dead battery, inflate tires, some have a small lamp for nighttime use, and a 12v accesory plug for running small 12v accessories or charging a cell phone. You charge the internal battery with 110v power and in most cases, you can simply leave the pack plugged in so it's always charged.

I've seen the HF compressor and while it looks nice, the clamps for the power lead are a PITA to use. You hve to open the hood and attach to the battery. If you are filling tires at the rear or on another car, the cord doesn't always reach. Pull on the power cord and the clamps can come off the battery terminal.

The hose is pretty cheap material and the connectors will eventually fail if you stretch the hose out too man times.

I have one very similar to that Harbor F. one. I got it free from 4wheelparts.com when I ordered my wheels/tires. I love it!! I use it for my truck and the toys at the track.

So does any one have a recomended unit to fill this need? I would also like to have a small air compressor but I try to stay away from Harbor freight and Craftsman if at all possible. I find you get what you pay for with these two companies, which isn't much.

After much research I purchased this one: Master Flow MF-1050 Tsunami High Volume Portable Air Compressor Apparently it can be modified (drilled out) for faster flow, but I have not done that. On Amazon it is currently $83.15 but when I purchased it last July it was a bargain at $48.99. The leads are long enough that if you replace the battery clips with a trailer connector, and plug into the GM trailer connector at the tailgate, you can stretch to refill the front tires on a 2500HD extended cab with long bed. It easily fills the front tires, and takes longer (but ok) for the 80psi rear tires. This and similar units are highly recommended on the various off-road forums for inexpensive refilling of tires after under-inflation for soft surfaces.

Yeah I got jump pack that came with a air compressor, and really feel kind of ripped off by it, it does not inflat anything fast at all. I could spend 5mins to bring my truck tires up a few psi. I just got home from Harbor Freight with the shown in my 1st post. It was on sale this week for 49.99 vs normal price of 69.99, it seams to be build well for the price. I tried it out to top of one tires that was down 3psi and it unit was very quit and topped it off in 30-secs. I will report back after I get to use it some more and let every one know how well it works.

That Harbor Freight compressor looks like a Chinese knock-off of a Viair compressor. The Viair will cost more initially, but chances are will outlast the Harbor Freight one by several fold, making it actually less expensive in the long run. My experience with "Central Pneumatic" products is they just don't hold up or last.

This Q Industries MF-1052 MasterFlow Q-Maxx Hi Volume Air Compressor looks very similar or even identical for $48.99. I agree with the comment - the tire valve connector on the hose leaves a lot to be desired, the the hose is a non standard size but easily replaced. If I was using the compressor frequently I would replace the tire valve connector with a quick attach/release type. For occasional (once per month or so top ups) I have not bothered.

I've had several in the past, but I picked this up about a year ago.

The unit is very heavy duty and I have used the jumper box, inflator, and the outlets a bunch of times and I must say that I am pretty impressed. Lately, we have had a rash of power outages for hours on end due to the weather and I was able to run the radio, emergency light on the pack, and a couple other accessories off this unit for several hours. There is also a 1 or 2 year warranty with this unit so thats not a bad thing either!

I just got a Black & Decker air station for Christmas and it works quite well. So far I've only used the 120 plug, but it'll also run off the cigar plug in the truck.

    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
