Have 650 miles on my 2008 silverado 2500 HD 6.0. Should my first oil change be within 1000 miles? I called the dealer, and he said there is no need to do the first change early. What do you guys think?

I agree with your dealer. Absolutely no reason to do it early.

Pull an oil sample and send it off to have analyzed. You would be surprised as to what is floating around inside the engine from break in wear. No need to have that in longer than needed. But then most do not change their oil until around 3k and never have a problem. So the choice is yours.

Terry Dyson, who does my oil analysis told me to change out at 500 miles then just the oil at 1500 leaving the oil filter on and then a full oil change at 3k and then start my regular routine from there. I went by his recommendation because he sees all kinds of oil come in for analysis. So if he feels it is worth it then I changed it. His 20 years as a Tribologist trumps my 30yrs of shade tree mechanics.

Change the filter. Use the same filter or another high quality element. The first few miles generate a lot of debris. Just change it, that way there is no chance that debris can escape in the built in bypass stream, that the filter has as a starvation prevention safeguard.
