N8TheGreat Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Hey guys...I'm new to the whole Chevy thing. I got a 98 4Runner with 140,XXX miles. It's lifted and got a bunch of goodies with a Magnaflow exhaust. I have a 18" on it, but I was wondering...should I get a 18" or 22" inch muffler? I'm trading on a 96 silverado with 69,XXX with a 350. It'll be dual in dual out with 2.5 piping. Don't want a catback, i dont think. Still trying to decide. Magnaflow says their catback for the 5.7 gives 22 more horses and 22 more lb. feet of torque, would just a muffler give me this? I want it louder than stock but not so loud I cant have a conversation....thanks for helping a chevy newb... Nate
ws6_guy Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 well if ur going with one of those super quiet things i say go for the 14". Like $65 off ebay. 22 more horses & lbs torque seems a little over estimated, if its dyno proven then awesome, but i think its actually half of that.
N8TheGreat Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 Is the catback worth it. I mean come on $500? Wouldn't a muffler and two tai;pipes do just as good of a job?

I don't know of any catback system that isn't mandrel bent. Most are stainless as well. If you can find a shop that can do mandrel bending you will pay for the effort. Having said that, there is a guy on ebay who sells mandrel bent pipes. Look for Mandrel Bending Solutions: http://stores.ebay.com/Mandrel-Bending-Sol...sQ3amesstQQtZkm You could probably design/order your own custom catback and then have it welded up by your local shop. Most local shops will use aluminized pipe and do not mandrel bend. I have a custom bent exhaust on mine because no kit was available at the time. When this one wears out I'll either order from the shop above or order a catback from Magnaflow. You can order for less than $500 for a catback unless you want a Corsa or Borla. Kevin
Griffin86 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 I have 2 polished stainless steel magnaflows on my truck w/o cats and its fairly loud, it has 2.5 inch pipe with 4" tips and it was custom built. At 80 kph it resonates in my cab pretty bad. Also it sounds like a muscle car!

Kevin Thanks for the eBay link. looks like a good deal. I'll probably end up getting this and buying a magnaflow muffler nate.
cerbomark Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I believe the 22 would be quieter than the 18. I would go with the 22. Should be only slightly louder and deeper than stock.
