Please Help! Power Steering Problems

I have a 2002 silverado 1500 with 4x4 and the power steering has been going out. I just replaced the pump and now it works when I turn to the right but not when I turn to the left. I thought it might be air but I turned the wheel back and forth for several minutes and still no improvement. It seems to be just cutting in and out but mostly out. Could it be the in the steering gear box? Any suggestions would be great.

If the assist is proper turning right but not left, I would suspect there is an issue with the valve in the steering gear that is the issue. Not bad to get at, but does requrie a couple of special tools to take it apart.
