Noobie Update And Questions.....

So I've had the truck for just going on 2 weeks and I am having a lot of fun with it. Mods so far:

1. Linex over the rails with Xtra

2. Tint

3. Colormatched door handles

4. DIC mod

I have also ordered the DL3 mirrors with power folding, LED signal, puddle lamps etc. I still need the part number to the door switch so I will do that next. I am determined to make this mod work and will update on my progress. Now the questions, does every V8 come with AFM? I noticed after the DIC mod that it will shift from V8 mode to V4 mode intermittently. Also the tire sensors, don't they need the special valve caps to work and get a reading on the DIC? The next things on the list will be the bed cover and bumper/grille painted black. What bed cover is everyone using? Solid tonneau or roll up? What about vent visors, mud guards and wheel well inner lining? I dont like the looks of vent visors but will consider it if they actually work. Anyone done the 3M sheild thing insted of the bugsheild? Best offer up best brands and places to purchase these items. BTW, the wife is not happy with all the MOD's. I spent a couple hrs doing the door handle swap and she did not even notice the difference......one more thing, anyone know the part number to the door lock thingies? Those things are a pain in the butt to take off and I broke one. Need to order a box to have on hand as I will be taking these door panels off a few times :)

3m film on my truck here

Keep us posted on the mirror upgrade. Is your truck an LT1?

I found the part numbers for everything a couple of days ago, read a post on here for more information, and chickened out. Here's what I understand of it. If you have the electronic door modules it will be basically plug and play after about $400 in total parts. If you don't have the door modules, everything will work except the power fold feature (assuming you are starting with the heated electric mirrors). You need a Tech II to find out if you have the door modules built in or not.

$400 was way too much for me to spend without the guarantee that it will work. Also you have to take it to the dealer when you're done to get it flashed for some reason when you're done....don't ask me why.

BTW, I've never understood the point of the vent visors if you're a non-smoker. What good do they do? I know smokers like them because they can crack their windows, pollute the environment, and not hear a bunch of wind noise in the meantime. They can then proceed to toss their cigarette butt out of their cracked window when they're finished and continue treating the earth like their ash tray.

And your point is . . . :)

It infuriates me when people toss their cigarettes out the window. I feel like following them to their house and dumping my garbage all over their driveway. In fact, that's why I always keep a few bags of garbage on my passenger seat.

If you have ever got in your truck on a rainy/snowy day after a day's hard snowboarding or snowmobiling or kayaking or whatever then you need to have the windows open a crack to help keep the windows clear. If it's raining and you have the d.s. window open the wiper pushes all that crap right into you - it's awful and an annoying design flaw. The ventshades make it possible to have the window ajar without having all that weather come into the cab, which is why they're such a good idea. Granted they make little sense on the extended cab rear windows on the pre-2007's.

And that's MY point! :)

That's easy. They keep the snow and rain out when I have my windows down a bit. I don't smoke

I HATE it when some moron flips his cig butt out his TransAm window and hits my windshield. I usually get his license number, run it, and flame him To every state agency via SPAM email, using his real RETURN ADDRESS... I'd love to see the followup mail they get!

BUT I AM AN EVIL CLOWN. :)

A closed window would do the same thing though...I mean your truck did come climate controlled, right? I don't know, not meaning to insult anyone who has them I just think they are a tacky add-on with no real purpose.

Then again I live in Texas where snow is extremely rare so maybe it's just related to my climate.

In the deep south in the Summer, the ability to lock your truck with the windows cracked a bit is quite the luxury. The difference between 140F and 110F is profound.

ok now heat is one thing I do know about. I don't think cracked windows really make that much of a difference, but they definitely do help. I still crack mine a little when I know it isn't going to rain, but you make a good point and at least that's the first valid reason I can see to have them. I think I'd take the heat over the looks though. Too bad GM can't engineer the rain sensing windshield to roll up any open windows.

I think you might have reported the wrong guy - Smokey was the cop. The guy driving the Trans Am was the Bandit. (and I hope that quick edit was quick enuf!) :)

The point of what I was saying was when the windows are down a bit there are times they need to be down. I am aware that a closed window would keep the weather out. I was not being a smartass in my first reply, you asked a question and I answered it.

Well I smoke, and I have never and will never throw a butt out the window. I have an ashtray for that(one with a lid that closes tight). I've been smoking in my truck for 9 months, and it still smells new.

I know it's a filthy habit, but it's better than dipping snuff. :) I do plan on quitting one of these days though. :)

I was behind a guy eating something on the way home from work, and he kept throwing some kind of wrapper out his window. I honked at him, but he just ignored me, if it would have landed on my truck I would have found a way for him not to ignore me. He was in a TOYota tacoma.

    • I tried tapping it.  This might sound like a dumb question, you should feel vibration or some type of noise when it turns on? Can someone please verify? Thank you all!
    • I feel better now for my own view point and actions or lack there of towards the dealership service theme reading your post and others. GM corporate is who offers the two free oil changes on the HD trucks and I bought my truck in Feb of 2025 and those oil change offers run out within 2 years I believe and I highly doubt I will be using either one of them. I had asked if I could officially give those free services to another customer ( a friend ) and they said no, its all a GM corporate thing based on the vehicle in question. What that service advisor did however was go into a little story about how such and such customer was denied engine warranty because he had done his own oil changes because then they are not documented ... you see where that goes and so an employee playing the game of scaring the customer into having the service work done there most certainly triggered my thought process. At a later date I did talk to the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership and she said to be sure to document the oil changes and keep receipts for the oil and filter ( coped the receipts from cases of Mobil oil and case of filters I bought from them ) and the vehicles VIN, the date of service, mileage etc and staple that together as a record I would give them if that was ever needed and I keep my own log book for services for each vehicle as well. Oh and about 8 months after I bought the truck the dealer starts calling me to offer a maintenance service since they haven't seen my vehicle show up on their system ... for the mere fee of 300.00 Canadian to change the oil and rotate the tires and a few other minor checks and I declined the offer, I get the call again a couple of months later for the same thing and she could tell I was not interested and she asked if they should take my name off the call list and I said yes, do that !.    By the way did you happen to keep your factory oil filter to open it up and see the surprises inside as I expect some will show up as per the odd little sliver of metal shaving and particles that the filter does trap along with bits of grey silicone sealer that come off of the inside edge of mating surfaces. I have cut open every filter so far on my truck although few miles but have changed the oil often and the second filter was vastly better with very little of anything, that first filter was the unsettling one as I expected it would be.
    • I get why they do this…but man…not ideal. I only extract on inboard boat engines because the drains are buried and even then I hate it because it’s easy to leave a quart behind with that method.   They should market it as an “oil refresh” not oil change!
    • I only get oil changed where I can watch. Valvoline pulls through the dipstick into a see thru glass. When done they show me the dipstick. About the only way they can mess up is using the wrong oil. But that secret wouldn’t stay secret long. Honda uses TQ wrenches on everything. You can watch through a plate glass window. Discount tires does that with tires. Trust but verify.
    • I would not argue that with you. It would be pointless to argue against the truth and you speak the truth.    My question and in fact the entire point of this thread is an exploration into the levers of wear which happens no matter how well we maintain our powertrains.    Some of these levers we exert a good deal of influence over which can and do result is lower wear, longer powertrain life. Some others we are sort of stuck with.    An engine is typically done when the ring to bore seal no longer is able to do the job effectively. Normally the first thing to go in a engine otherwise well maintained and adult driven is this seal.    Looking into the means, methods, products and attitudes that influence the rate of wear seems a worthwhile inquiry to me.
