Muffler Heat Shield

OK, so everyone is aware of the popping muffler heat shield. GM's fix is to put big SS hose clamps on the existing SS bands and tighten the piss of 'em. However, this does not work. But, I have found the solution.

 

I had the TSB done as well with no success and decided to just take off the heat shield entirely. But when i crawled under the truck to cut of the bands and i got a wild idea and gave it a try.

 

If you notice the heat shield, on the pass. side, is held against the crimp/seam of the muffler - this keeps the heat shield from sitting flush against the muffler. so here is the fix:

 

1. Go buy SS hose clamps to replace factory straps if you do not already have them from the TSB fix.

 

2. If you have the SS straps put on described in the TSB then remove and save for later.

 

3. Cut off factory straps.

 

4. Rotate heat shield a few degrees so that the edge of the HS is no longer on the seam of the muffler.

 

5. Re-strap the HS with adjustable SS hose clamps and your done.

 

Trust me, it works...NO MORE SNAP, CRACKLE, & POP!

Sounds like a lot of work when you could just take it off completely?

well, it took like 10 mins. its just some people are under the belief that it needs to be there for something since GM put it there...i personally think its BS, but i just wanted to see if this would work.

Maybe so, I'll keep my heat shield in the attic or something and if I hear a legit reason to put it back on then I will take the steps you mentioned.

aye we used to do the clamp one o nthe escalades all the time, think we finally did em all around here tho
