Towing Trouble?

Guys I have an 02 Sonoma with the 4.3 motor in it. Recently I bought a 14 foot single axle trialer that weighs about 1100 pounds. I also had two 4 wheelers loaded up on it bringing the total weight to at most 3000 pounds. I drove mostly interstate for a 150 miles and some backroads when I noticed it starting to run hot. The whole way home it stayed up close to 3/4 on the temp gauge but never in the red. I just put a thermostat in it and when there is no trailer it runs perfect right below 210. I checked all the usual stuff but everything seems good. Surely this truck should be able to tow 3000 pounds without a problem according to the owners manual it says about 5000. It was about 75 degrees when I towed in the day and about 55 that night when it still ran hot. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks.

Do you have a tranny cooler installed on it? My old 98 Silverado would run hot without an external tranny cooler installed. I bought a Hayden HD tranny cooler and the temps stayed closer to 210 while towing instead of above the 210 mark. Normally the engine ran at 180 by itself. Most of the time its the transmission heating up the radiator so then it heats up the engine.

I am really at a loss now. I have been running just the truck by itself for the past couple weeks and it has ran perfect with the a/c on also. I hooked back up to my trailer today with just one 4 wheeler so I may have had 1500 pounds total and it started running hot. I have flushed the cooling system out also and just dont know what it can be unless the truck just isnt strong enough to tow anything. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

How many miles on your 02?

Have you had the trans checked by a "reputable" trans shop?

Have 140000 miles on it. It shifts just fine. Just curious why would you ask?

Just invest in a cooler. It's only about 50-60 bucks and you can install it yourself. I got a Hayden HD trans cooler and the adaptor fittings for the radiator for about 56 bucks from Oreilly's. Thats what solved the heat issues in my 98. I had 146,000 miles on it too with a rebuilt trans at 97,000 and it could still get hot. Other wise check your water pump flow and maybe you could check that fan clutch. If it is bad the fan might not be pulling enough air when it gets hot for awhile. Check for leaks around the shaft to the water pump. Other than that I'm out of ideas cause I checked all those when I had my problems.

Well, this see....

The "reputable" trans shop could test drive for issues.

The "reputable" trans shop could hook up the 'puter and check various signals.

The "reputable" trans shop could drop the pan, which will allow them to check for "signs" in the bottom of the pan and kinda read them like "tea leaves" for developing issues.

Just because it drives fine for you does not mean that there is not any issues.

Just like you desktop 'puter.

Just because it "sounds" OK does not mean that there are not any issues.

A "reputable" geek could diagnose near death issues.

And as mentioned ... get stacked plate external cooler.

Well I called the radiator shop and they are gonna check the whole cooling system out for me. I do have a transmission cooler on it because there is a line coming from the transmission to the radiator and back out. Will see what they tell me tomorrow.

We are referring to an EXTERNAL cooler.

Just about the whole world has the internal cooler.

Let us know that the rad shop has to say.

Well just got back from the shop, they said that the radiator was pretty clogged up and they rodded it out. They think it had just enough flow under regular load to stay cool but when pulling anything the radiator was just too clogged for good flow. Hope that fixes it. I also had it lined up and they said I need a new steering box thats why there is slack in the steering wheel.

Im not telling you how to spend money, but I agree with everyone about investing in a tranny cooler if you are going to tow anything. $60.00 for a cooler and hardware vs $2500.00 for a new tranny.

Shane, if you do the external cooler I would strongly recommend a stacked plate cooler and Hayden makes them in about 4 sizes. If you live in a warm climate, get the 11 x 11 x 3/4 if you live in a climate where the temps are very low in the winter you need to stick with one about 7 x 11 x 3/4. It is rare but you can overcool the fluid if the outside temps are really low.

Also, I would suggest you run it in series just as the MFG's do. This means the fluid will still go from the trans to the internal cooler in the radiator then to the ext cooler and then back to the trans. This is the OE method and the best IMO.

    • It's possible the two trucks are using different body control modules which is why yours works and the OP's doesn't.   So much in these newer vehicles depends on model/trim configurations, production date. They don't all use the same modules like back in the day.
    • I forgot to answer the question as per what market mine is set to and yes I finally found that area on mine and yes its also set to America.   So here's something I realized as I wasn't looking at that part in the Sierra section until now, your right that what I see here as choice 3 under Sierra which says 07/2023-06/2026 ( 433 MHz 13542523 ) it has no choice 5 for tire pressure selection. Where as it does under the Chev choice. However I kept going down the list within the Sierra and I am really wondering if choice 9 will work for your truck as it has the same model number and hertz sensor as my truck. I would say try that choice first, if that doesn't work then jump over to the Chev section and again choose that same model and hertz choice as for some reason the Chev section gives the choice 5 of tire type/pressure selection for going back a number of years. Could very well be an Autel thing that they just didn't get the updates all done properly under Sierra but anyway first try that selection 9 I suggested under Sierra and then go from there.
    • Looking for this piece that holds the hose clamp in place. I have the hose clamp just not that other piece. Dealers and wrecking yards in my area will not sell just that piece. They want you to buy the whole air tube $100 +/- to get that $5 part.  that piece isn't molded to the air tube as I looked at my friends truck. It's held on by a screw and nut. I'm trying to put the OEM parts on the truck as the previous owner butchered things up installing an aftermarket CAI. It really looked homemade. 🤣 Thanks
    • Ok I missed that part that yours is a GM. The strange part is that the choice for year ranges and within the year of 2026 is different on the Sierra then on the Chev for some reason as I am looking at my tool at the Sierra choices. Now I am guessing you see as to your sensor part number as it may be different on your truck for some reason and a call to GM should get you the part model number of the sensors you should have as well as which MHz your sensors are. I know mine are the ones as per what I listed but there are other choices in the Autel and got me wondering if by some chance they put different ones in your truck. Having said that, did you try using each of the choices starting from No 1 and going on down the list, not sure if that would mean shutting off the engine each time and resetting the tool and going at it again each time. Also I thought of something else which may sound retarded but if there was some stupid chance that the chev choice would work. The reason I say that is that the Sierra is showing a range up to 06/2026 for the various choices of sensors it could be where as the Chev has one choice that has that 12/2026. By the way it is possible to not run the truck and you may know that as per not pressing the brake but pressing and holding the start button for a few seconds and it lights up the dash ( its called service mode ) but that sucks battery power and if it were me doing it that way I would be throwing on a decent sized battery charger before doing it that way as killing your battery won't make you happy at me at all !.    Like I say, just a thought to try the Chev choices if you have already exhausted the Sierra choices but first it would be nice to know for sure what exact sensor model and hertz your truck uses as I assume only those choices that mention the sensor would work unless a choice that does not mention the sensor model would somehow work. Its frustrating when one is trying to use tools like this without the experience of the tool and the vehicle, as I am sure dealer techs themselves struggle with it when starting out or a new model year comes along that is slightly different.
    • I tried before I updated the scan tool just incase an update messed it up, but it never worked so I updated the scan tool and it still didn't work.   Only difference is I click on Sierra not Chevrolet cause I have a Sierra.   If I click on 2026-2024 I didn't have any option to change placard, when I click on 2023 it does give me the option but when I try to do it,.it says vehicle not supported!   I have my region or market or whatever it is set to America I think, is that what yours is set to?
