Auto Headlight Sensor

I just took my dash apart on my 06 silverado to reinstall the headlight sensor which had fallen down into the defroster vent. It still seems too loose.

 

Can someone please look at their sensor and tell me if it has a retainer ring of some sort. Perhaps mine is missing. I'm afraid it will fall into the vent again.

A little silicone would help if you're concerned about it falling out again. But it should turn a little to lock into the dash panel.

Yes, it turns but it doesn't seem to lock tightly.

 

Silicon may do the trick. Applied from underneath, it won't show.

Removal Procedure

 

1. Remove the instrument panel top cover. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
   
   
   
2. Disconnect the electrical connector (1) to the ambient light sensor on the underside of the IP top cover.
   
3. Turn the ambient light sensor 1/4 turn and remove it from the IP top cover.
   

Installation Procedure

 

1. Install the ambient light sensor to the underside of the IP top cover, turning it 1/4 turn to secure it in place.
   
    
   
2. Connect the electrical connector (1) to the ambient light sensor on the underside of the IP top cover.
   
3. Install the instrument panel top cover. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.

Removal Procedure

 

1. 
   Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.
    
   Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

• Air bag deployment

 

• Personal injury

 

• Unnecessary SIR system repairs

 

In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:

• Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.

 

• If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

 

 

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the I/P trim pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement .
Remove the center console, if equipped. Refer to Console Replacement .
Remove the driver side knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
Remove the lower I/P trim panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Lower Trim Panel Replacement .
Remove the passenger side air bag module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
Remove the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment.
Remove the HVAC control. Refer to Control Assembly Replacement in HVAC Systems-Manual or Automatic.
Remove the accessory switch housing. Refer to Accessory Switch Replacement .
Remove the left air louver housing. Refer to Instrument Panel Air Outlet Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
Remove the VIU, if equipped. Refer to OnStar Vehicle Interface Unit Replacement in Cellular Communication.
Remove the VCU, if equipped. Refer to OnStar Vehicle Communication Unit Replacement in Cellular Communication.
Remove the remote control door lock receiver module, if equipped. Refer to Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Replacement in Keyless Entry.
Remove the data link connector from the I/P. Refer to Data Link Connector Replacement in Data Link Communications.
Remove the park brake release lever from the I/P. Refer to Parking Brake Release Handle Assembly Replacement in Park Brake.
Remove the I/P cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
Remove both front window air duct from the I/P assembly.
Remove the harness from the I/P. Refer to Fuse Block Replacement .

 
Remove the I/P assembly retaining bolts (3) and nuts (4).
Remove all harness hold down retainers from the I/P assembly.
Remove the I/P assembly from the vehicle.

 
Remove the I/P upper brackets.
Disconnect all the electrical connectors from the wiring harness junction block. Refer to Fuse Block Replacement .
Remove the transfer case control module from the bracket, if equipped. Refer to Transfer Case Shift Control Module Replacement in Transfer Case NV6 246 - NP8.
Remove the antenna cable from the cross car duct.
Remove the cross car duct. Refer to Air Distributor Duct Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
Remove the amplifier, if equipped. Refer to Radio Speaker Amplifier Replacement in Entertainment.
Separate the I/P harness from the carrier.Do not remove the I/P harness from the vehicle.
 
 

 
If replacing the HVAC module, remove the right side of the carrier from the vehicle to gain access to the module.

 
Remove the I/P center support bracket bezel (1).

 
Important: Remove all of the parts of the I/P carrier assembly from the vehicle as a unit.
 
Remove the I/P center support bracket bolt.

 
Remove the I/P carrier side bolts.The left side is shown, the right side is similar.

2. Remove the I/P carrier (1) from the vehicle.
   

Installation Procedure

2. Position the I/P carrier (1) in the vehicle.Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
    
    
   
    
   
3. Install the I/P carrier top bolts (1).Tighten
   Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
    
    
   
    
   
4. Install the I/P carrier side bolts.The left side is shown, the right is similar.
    
   Tighten
   Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
    
    
   
    
   
5. Install the I/P center support bracket bolt.Tighten
   Tighten the bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
    
    
   
    
   
6. Install the I/P center support bracket bezel (1).
   
    
   
7. Install the right side of the carrier to the vehicle, if the HVAC module was removed.
   
8. Install the retaining bolts.Tighten
   Tighten bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
    
   
9. Attach the I/P harness to the carrier.
   
10. Install the amplifier, if equipped. Refer to in Radio Speaker Amplifier Replacement in Entertainment.
    
11. Install the cross car duct. Refer to Air Distributor Duct Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning
    
12. Install the antenna cable to the cross car duct.
    
13. Install the transfer case control module to the bracket, if equipped. Refer to Transfer Case Shift Control Module Replacement in Transfer Case NV6 246 - NP8.
    
14. Connect all of the electrical connectors to the wiring harness junction block. Refer to Fuse Block Replacement .
    
     
    
15. Install the I/P upper brackets.Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 2 N·m (18 lb in)
     
     
    
     
    
16. Install the I/P assembly to the vehicle.
    
17. Install the I/P assembly retaining nuts (4) and bolts (3).Ensure the wire harness is routed to all of the openings.
     
    Tighten
    Tighten the retaining bolts (3) and nuts (4) to 9 N·m (80 lb in).
     
    
18. Install the harness hold down retainers to the I/P assembly.
    
19. Install the harness to the I/P. Refer to Fuse Block Replacement .
    
20. Install both front window air duct to the I/P assembly.
    
21. Install the I/P cluster assembly. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
    
22. Install the park brake release lever to the I/P. Refer to Parking Brake Release Handle Assembly Replacement in Park Brake.
    
23. Install the data link connector to the I/P. Refer to Data Link Connector Replacement in Data Link Communications.
    
24. Install the remote control door lock receiver module, if equipped. Refer to Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Replacement in Keyless Entry.
    
25. Install the VCU, if equipped. Refer to OnStar Vehicle Communication Unit Replacement in Cellular Communication.
    
26. Install the VIU, if equipped. Refer to OnStar Vehicle Interface Unit Replacement in Cellular Communication.
    
27. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
    
28. Install the left air louver housing. Refer to Instrument Panel Air Outlet Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
    
29. Install the accessory switch housing. Refer to Accessory Switch Replacement .

37. Connect the negative battery cable.

Removal Procedure

 

1. Set the air flow control to the instrument panel (IP) vent position if equipped with air conditioning (A/C).
   
2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
   
3. Apply the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from moving.
   
4. Move the shift lever all the way down (if the transmission is automatic).
   
5. Tilt the steering wheel to the full down position.
   
6. Remove the IP cluster trim plate bezel. Refer to Instrument Panel Cluster Trim Plate Bezel Replacement .
   
    
   
7. Remove the end panels. Left is shown, right is similar.
   
8. Remove the right side air outlets. Refer to Instrument Panel Air Outlet Replacement in Heating and Ventilation (Non-A/C).
   
    
   
9. Remove the assist handle by depressing the release tabs accessed through the air outlet duct holes.
   
10. Remove the windshield pillar garnish moldings. Refer to Windshield Pillar Garnish Molding Replacement in Interior Trim.
    
11. Remove the bolts retaining the pad to IP assembly
    
     
    
12. Disconnect the electrical connector (1) to the ambient light sensor on the underside of the trim pad.
    
     
    
13. Remove the trim pad from the assembly.
    

Installation Procedure

 

1. 
   
    
   
2. Install the trim pad to the IP assembly.
   
    
   
3. Connect the electrical connector (1) to the ambient light sensor on the underside of the trim pad.
   
    
   Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
    
   
4. Install the trim pad retaining screws.Tighten
   Tighten the trim pad retaining screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).
    
   
5. Install the windshield pillar garnish moldings. Refer to Windshield Pillar Garnish Molding Replacement in Interior Trim.
   
    
   
6. Align the assist handle with the holes in the IP assembly. Push the handle in order to engage the retaining tabs.
   
7. Install the right side air outlets. Refer to Instrument Panel Air Outlet Replacement in Heating and Ventilation (Non-A/C).
   
    
   
8. Install the end panels. Left is shown, right is similar.
   
9. Install the IP cluster trim plate bezel. Refer to Instrument Panel Cluster Trim Plate Bezel Replacement .
   
10. Tilt the steering wheel to the normal driving position.
    
11. Move the shift lever to the park position (if the transmission is automatic).
    
12. Disengage the parking brake.
    
13. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.

Removal Procedure

 

1. Open the center console door.
   
    
   
2. Remove the 4 bolts attaching the center console to the console bracket.
   
3. Remove by lifting the center console from the bracket.
   

Installation Procedure

 

1. The new console is attached to a bracket.Separate the center console from the bracket by removing the retaining bolts.
    
   
2. Position the new center console on the bracket in the vehicle.Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
    
    
   
    
   
3. Install the 4 retaining bolts to the bracket.Tighten
   Tighten the bolts to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).
    
   
4. Close the center console door.

Removal Procedure

 

1. Open the console door.
   
    
   
2. Remove the 4 bolts attaching the center console to the console bracket.
   
    
   
3. Remove the cupholder from the console by using a flat bladed tool to pry the cupholder out.
   
    
   
4. Remove the 2 screws retaining the center console (1) to the console extension (3).
   
5. Remove the center console from the bracket.Important: Do not grab or pull on the CD storage door when removing the trim bezel
    
    
   
    
   
6. Remove the screws securing the trim bezel to the console extension.
   
7. Use a small prying device to gently push in the tabs underneath the trim bezel securing the top of the trim bezel.
   
8. Remove the trim bezel.
   
9. Remove the console extension upper compartment insert.
   
10. Remove the remote CD player, if equipped. Refer to Remote Compact Disc Player Replacement in Entertainment.
    
     
    
11. Remove the bolts attaching the console extension to the instrument panel (IP).
    
12. Slide the extension rearward and unclip the extension from the upper fasteners.
    

Installation Procedure

 

1. Slide the extension forward and onto the upper fasteners.
   
    
   Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
    
   
2. Install the bolts attaching the console extension to the IP.Tighten
   Tighten the bolts to 2 N·m (18 lb in).
    
   
3. Install the console extension upper compartment insert.
   
4. Install the remote CD player, if equipped. Refer to Remote Compact Disc Player Replacement in Entertainment.
   
5. Install the trim bezel.Tighten
   Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).
    
    
   
    
   
6. Position the center console on the bracket (2).
   
7. Install the screws attaching the center console to the console extension.Tighten
   Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).
    
    
   
    
   
8. Install the cupholder by push till it locks into place.
   
    
   
9. Install the 4 retaining bolts to the bracket.Tighten
   Tighten the bolts to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).
    
   
10. Close the console door.

3. Remove the knee bolster screws.
   
4. Unsnap the top of the knee bolster from the IP assembly.
   

Installation Procedure

 

1. 
   Notice: Refer to

Snap the top of the knee bolster into the IP assembly.
Install the knee bolster screws.Tighten
Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).
 
Install the IP cluster trim plate bezel. Refer to Instrument Panel Cluster Trim Plate Bezel Replacement .
