My dad had a similar issue with his '04 LLY-equipped Sierra. I would hear a big "clunk" when taking off from, and coming to, a stop. I was fearing that the diff was gone. It turned out that the planetary gear set bearing in the transfer case went bad and was spinning as one piece  . It caused the T-Case main shaft to wobble which caused the rear slip yoke to destroy itself and and the bushing around it. Since the bearing had spun the T-case housing was no good so he had to spend $1500  on a whole new t-case plus around $250 for a new rear slip yoke. It was a lot of money but the truck runs like new.

To check for a bad slip yoke bushing, crawl under your truck and grab the U-joint behind the yoke and push up and down. If there is any more than about 1/4" of play then it's toast. Another good idea is to check the yoke splines. Grab that same area and twist. Any more than 3/16"-1/4" of play there and theres a good chance the slip yoke is a gonner.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I had the slip yoke issue on my last truck but it was only from a stop that I had the bump. I've not heard of one doing it when stopping. Sounds more like a lock up converter not disengaging... Might have them check. If the converter disengages late, it can create a shudder when you roll to a stop.

You talking about Fred?

It's doing it again.

It doesn't slip when I stop, just when I release the brake...CLUNK. Then sometimes again when I start.

I just haven't had time to get under there and take care of it lately.
