05 Sierra 4x4 Low Clunk

I have purchased an 05 sierra z71 offroad crew 4x4, i am hearing a clunking sound, metal to metal from the transfer case when 4 low is activated or deactivated, it does not do it from 2 to 4 hi and vise versa, is this normal.

You will hear some noise going into low range. Do you have it in neutral? Every time I put my truck into any 4x4 i hear it switching. 4x4 low i can hear the gears go together, but they dont grind.

I have it in neutral and it is not grinding, it is more of a tinny sound, like the plunger pushing into transfer case and stopping . i think its normal but i want to be sure, truck has bumper to bumper gm warranty for 3 months

I have an 07, and it clunks pretty good when you shift into 4lo, salesman said it was normal. Also, I dont think it would shift if you didnt have it in neutral.

All my 01, 04 and 07 trucks clunked and clanked while switching

in or out of 4 wheel lo. but operated normally in lo otherwise.

Pretty normal for electric shift t-cases, it's mainly due to all the actuators forcing the gear shift. Some of the old manual shifts were a little bit loud, but mainly because of the torque shift.

 

My 06 2500hd and 07 1500 both can be pretty loud and I always feel it shifting in and out of 4-lo. It DOES seem to get quieter as you use it over time and the gears wear in. One thing I don't like about the electric shifts is that it takes a LONG time to get into low range.

Normal for it to be noisy when it shifts into 4-Low.

Yeah every vehicle we have is loud in 4x4 low shifting, 4x4 high is just a servo type noise which is nothing other then an indicator to me that its doing something.

Wouldn't worry about it. Shifting into and out of the low range gears will always make a little noise. I've never heard one that shifted to 4 low silently. As long as there aren't any funny noises after it shifts into 4 low, you should be fine. It might also help if you are rolling 1-4 mph (in neutral of course).
