I ordered a new 1500 HD and was wondering if there is a way I can track my order, has it started building, is it built, has it been shipped etc. Any help would be appreciated

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your purchase.  I'm not sure if there's a way to track how your truck is doing.  The only thing that you can do is bug your dealer about it, but I'm not sure how much they can do.

It would be cool to go to the plant and walk down the assembly line as they make it.

First you go by your dealership, and for a copy of the Vehicle Order Detail.  This will give you the oppurtunit to confirm that they ordered exactly what you intended.  (I didn't do this for the truck I orderred in July, and that's why I still don't have my new truck).  On the detail you'll find an order number, which will have 6 characters and may not include any numbers at all.  If they cannot give you a detail sheet it means that the order has not yet been sent to GM because your dealer is waiting for allocation.  (That is, they have a stack of orders waiting to be placed, and yours hasn't come to the top yet.)

With an order number in hand you call Customer Care, 1-800-462-8782 for GMC or 1-800-222-1020 for Chevy.  They can tell you the status of your order.  Ask them about your TPW (Targeted or Tentative Production Week).  TPW's change, so check back.

In the middle of the week in which your truck is scheduled to be built send an e-mail to [[email protected]].  He's a contributor known as Pontiac_m18 at thedieselpage.com and pickuptruck.com and I wouldn't post his e-mail here if he hadn't doen it both of those places a whole bunch of times.  In the message include your order number and TPW, and ask him to add you to his "Watch For" list.  He works at the Pontiac East assembly plant, and has friends in the shipping department.  He will keep you updated once your truck shows up in shipping (which is where customer care looses track of it) and give you updates as it rides the rails to you.

Your salesman will be amazed when he calls you with an update and you know more than he does.
