 My 1998 Blazer started making a rattling noise, I was out of town and the garages were closed so I kept driving it that night as I assumed it was not a big deal, however later that night it started making a clunk noise when I shifted. The next morning the noise was worse, it was doing it constantly instead of just when I shifted from Park to Reverse to Drive. I took it to the nearest garage I could find and he said my transfer case had about a quarter size hole in it that looked like it had blown out from inside. He said if I drove any further it would cause the transmission to seize up.

Did I ruin my transmission?! Can this be fixed at home by a person who knows a lot about cars or does a "trained professional" need to do it? Garage said they would charge a minimum of $1500 to do it, junk yard said they had a transfer case for sale for $350, I can't really afford $1500 but if it's my only choice than so be it... Any and all responses would be helpful.

its one thing to know a lot about cars , but if you have never done work on a transfer case , i personally would not touch it. I'm all up for doing my own work, but when it comes to that, leave it to the professionals. not to sound stupid but if you have to come on a public forum to ask a bunch of strangers if you are capable to do the work, i would say you answered your own question. ;) goodluck and welcome to the site
