hey all

just finished doin a oil change on my 07 silvy nbs

and i noticed i bought the wrong oil.

i put in 5w50 instead of 5w30.

is this gonna affect anything?

should i change it back to 5w30?

im about to go on a 10 hour drive next week with the truck pulling a boat.

i dont want any issues.

your opinions would be appreciated

5W-50 is especially suited for high speed and severe service associated with stop and go driving. Racing or normal driving ......this is what mobile 1 said ...its a full synthetic and is approved by gm...all oil companies have this viscosity...amsoil , quaker state, mobile 1 etc..etc.. you should be fine.

It may be lightweight oil (like it should be) on startup but it becomes 50 weight when hot. There may only be a small chance that it would hurt anything but to be on the safe side I would drain it. It's a lot cheaper that a new engine.

I'd drain it and refill. Probably don't have to replace the filter just drain the oil out of the filter as well as the engine.

I was working for sears back about 7 years ago when they first started doing oil changes. The guy who was training us for sears oil change program made special mention of not putting anything but 20 weight oil in the fords and mazdas that called for it because anything heavier was too thick to properly lubricate. He said that sears already had to replace several engines because some employees had used 30 weight oil which caused blown engines.

Now I don't know if that could happen to a chevy with 50 weight oil but I wouldn't chance it especially since your going on a long road trip. Would hate for your trip to be ruined by a blown or damaged engine.

I doubt any serious damage would occur but I wouldn'ty chance it. Better safe than sorry in this case.

I'm gonna' vote for draining it.

You know......this coulda' been a poll :D
