Where Is Mileage Kept?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I know I have read on here several times people stating it is only kept in the IP however I was reading the new tech news from GM for July this evening and this is what was in it word for word. I even believe I was told I was incorrect for stating this one time after stating this, so now I am more confused than ever ;)

Refer to bulletin 07-08-49-020B for details.

When replacing an Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), the season odometer value needs to

be programmed into the new IPC. A table in bulletin 07-08-49-020B can be used as a reference guide to help identify what odometer programming method to use. The table lists most 2003-09 passenger cars and trucks (including Saturn), HUMMER H2, and HUMMER H3.

The table in the bulletin lists the component where the season odometer value is stored.

At present, there are three programming methods used:

- the Service Programming System (SPS)

- using the Electronic Service Center (ESC)

- the Tech 2 -- used to program the season odometer value in an exchanged BCM.

An exchanged IPC receives and displays the odometer value from the BCM, over the

serial data circuit, after cycling the ignition or driving the vehicle.

TIP: The updated table is available in the Reference Guide of the TechLink website.

Subject: IPC Odometer Programming Method Quick Reference Guide

Models: 2003-2009 GM Passenger Cars and Trucks (Including Saturn)

2003-2009 HUMMER H2, H3

2005-2009 Saab 9-7X

Attention: This bulletin applies to vehicles sold in the U.S. and Canada Only.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This bulletin is being revised to add information for the 2009 model year and add new 2009 vehicles. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 07-08-49-020A (Section 08 -- Body & Accessories).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide a reference guide to help identify which season odometer programming method to use after replacing the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). The three season odometer programming methods in use today are listed below. In addition, this reference guide lists the component where the season odometer value is stored. The season odometer value may be stored in the IPC, the Driver Information Center (DIC), or the Integrated Body Control Module (IBCM), also commonly called a Body Control Module (BCM).

Season Odometer Programming Methods In Use Today

IPC reprogramming and setup using the Service Programming System (SPS).

Odometer setup at the Electronic Service Center (ESC) when using an exchange IPC/DIC.

Tech2® -- The Tech2 is used to setup a replacement BCM, which includes loading the odometer value that is displayed and stored in the IPC. A replacement IPC will display the previously stored vehicle odometer value, communicated from the BCM, after cycling the ignition or driving the vehicle.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

Basically it depends on the vehicle as to where the mileage is stored.

On the Full Size trucks,Both GMT800/GMT900 it is stored in the instrument panel cluster (IPC)

On the Colorado/Canyon's it is stored in the BCM.

Holy Cow Rich! You owe me a new scroll wheel on me mouse!

Sorry Jim,Thats just the way it copied over

Hopefully everyone can understand it,If not just post what kind of vehicle you want to know about and I'll tell you where the mileage is stored and how its programmed in.
