Cold Air Induction

Do they really make a difference? After all, the air under the hood is not cold. Not trying to be smart, just fishing for info. I don't want to waste money if these things don't provide equal bang for the buck. Your thoughts?

When it is possible to verify that intake air temp is unduly high, CAI makes a lot of sense. That is why GM designes it into existing intakes.

In a word: Yes.

The style used for the 2001 does help keep the intake air somewhat cooler, as they add a wall around the air filter to insulate it from the rest of the engine bay. The other (possibly more important) thing you get with it is a smooth intake tube from the filter to the throttle body, removing the baffles that are there from the factory purely to reduce intake noise.

I have seen so many people buy all this fancy air intake's and filters, not one of them, comes with a guarantee. The reason they put in the ribs in the intake ducting is to give it strength, as it is under vacuum. I always get a chuckle out of some Moron that buys an intake system and the connections are so small they fall off and the motor sucks in dust, or they put on a KNN type and you take of the intake and wipe it with a clean soapy towel and it's full of dirt, invariably the first thing out of there mouth is, "Do you think it will have hurt it". I have worked on engines for most of my life, Class eight professionally, automotive, and pick-ups on the side. Any one that tells you that putting on an intake or exhaust system will give you better anything that maters is full of it. Putting a probe in the exhaust is dumb, in a class eight it is in the turbo outlet. An example is, you have all seen Freightliners class eight's with those big air cleaners, hanging on the side of the cab and others that have them under the hood, which one do you think gives more air to the engine. Most of you would be wrong as it is the one that is under the hood that is buy far the best. The intake is in front of the windshield and it gets a boost. If someone is trying to sell you something and there is no Guaranty, they are lying to you. PLAY SAFE!

actually the k& n fipk inake i just bought for my truck does guarantee a boost in hp. Says right on box.... And in the instructions if you can prove it didnt, they will refund you..

I added a dual exhaust and now the intake to my truck and noticed a big diff.

you basically already have a cold air intake, save yourself money and get the filter and a different intake tube. You will feel a difference and if you want to see a real jump in HP get a tuner to go with it!

Made a difference in mine. If it doesn't work, than why does GM sell one?

 To make money.

That's a good reason. And it's polished! Which doesn't matter to me since no one will ever see it under my hood.

while I agree with much of your post, you could be a little more diplomatic. The bold portion above is incorrect. The intake sits on the body, while the engine needs to rock and roll on mounts. The corregated section is for the needed flexibility.

Sorry, but all of your class eight truck experience has proven to be of ZERO value here. I'm not talking about RIBS. I'm talking about the baffle chambers that are on modern GEN III/IV intakes from the factory. They are there to make the incoming air in the intake quieter. The side effect is that they hurt flow. Putting a smoother intake tube in provides better flow. period. And yes, the replacements are engineered for the application and will not collapse under vacuum.

How about you stick to Class eight rigs, and I'll stick to modern small block V8s. KTHXBYE

I believe the Silverado 2500HD already comes with a high flow air filter. I've seen the prices on these after market air intakes, i think they are way over priced. I've also see some of the designs. Why would anyone want an exposed air filter? Wouldn't it concern you about getting it wet when driving in wet conditions? I've talked to people who are a master at their trade (mechanics) they tell me installing one of these aftermarket air intakes won't do anything. I once installed a high flow K&N on my F250 and winded up returning it, I did not notice any gains at all. Maybe tweaking the mass air flow sensor is all one needs for better air flow?

Installing a true dual cat back system, I did notice some small gains, but not much. If you really want to notice bolt on horsepower and have a fat enough wallet to afford it, go with a super charger.
