1998 5.7 Vortec Fuel Problem?

Hello all, I'm a newbie to this forum. I see lots of great info posted here and hope that someone can help me with an issue.

Last night I found what appears to be a great deal on a loaded 1998 Silverado Extended cab Z71. The truck shows 148k on the odometer and is extra clean. The problem is that it starts just great but dies after only 3-4 seconds. The engine sounds great when it's running and runs smoothly. When it dies out, the exhaust smells like it's running lean (hot and acrid smell). The engine will start again immediately after it dies and repeats the process. The dealer says this is a fuel pump or clogged fuel filter issue and they are going to fix it. I'm suspicious of a fuel filter being the cause due to the fact that it will start right up again.

I haven't had a chance to drive the truck to check it out any further and wanted to get some input from learned people on what to check for with the engine etc. I tentatively have this truck bought for $4300. If it passes all the other tests, it should be a steal.

Thanks for any input into this issue!

i would agree with it being either ff or pump, ff is easy to change and inexpensive, try that first, and if you can check your fuel pressure, should be 55-60psi

thanks for the reply!

I also read somewhere this morning that another owner of a 1998 Z71 had let his truck sit for some time and the battery went dead. He said he jumped it to start it and had these same exact symptoms. He went on to say that he learned it was a security system feature and could be reset by leaving the key in the on position for 10 minutes and allowing the system to "re-learn". This fixed his issue,

Has anyone encountered this?
