Help! Re:3500 Rated Weight

I'm writing on behalf of a friend but here's the gist of what I need:

I need proof of the rated weight class for a 1999 GMC 3500 dually crew cab diesel 4x4 with the longest wheel base available (sorry, giving info as it was given to me). My friend got a ticket for no inspection in NJ but in NJ you're not required to have an inspection sticker if vehicle is rated over 10,000 lbs. My friend has since sold the vehicle and has no access to it so cannot use the sticker from the inside of the door to prove this. Does anyone know where I can obtain proof of this fact that he can present to the police to avoid a pricey ticket?

IIRC, if it was over 10,000 lbs, wouldn't you need a CDL to drive it?

Which weight, combined, or singly?My F350 was rated at 20,000 lbs combined. My C2500 is rated at 8600 on the sticker. Combined rating is 12,000. They use the 8600 lbs as a limit for smog stuff, at least here in Cal. There is a different set of laws for over and under 85 or 8600, I forget which, but mine has the 8600 smog stuff. This is not definitive but hope it helps a little. I should also mention that the F350 was a CCLB V10 dually.

I'm not sure. All I remember is the International CXT is just under what is needed. If it was much heavier, you would need to be licensed. I don't think that the 3500 qualifies for that was my point though.

I was incorrect earlier. The truck probably does qualify.

You need a CDL if you operate any of the following vehicles.

. • All single vehicles with a manufacturer's weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more

. • All trailers with a manufacturer's weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, if the gross weight rating of the combined vehicle(s) is 26,001 pounds or more

. • All vehicles designed to transport 16 or more persons (including the driver). (Private, church, buses.)

• All vehicles that carry placarded amounts of hazardous materials (see following section on exemptions).

Unfortunately, "logical" doesn't count in court - indisputable evidence does. I may have what he needs, is it new or old body style?

I was thinking that there was a 9,000lbs GVW for the single rear wheel and 10,000lbs GVW for the Dually.

You're right - it was still just a 'classic' in 1999. GVWR was 9,000lb for 4x2, SRW 9,200 for 4x4 SRW, and 10,000 for dually. Now if we can just find batchick...

I have a PDF of the original sales brochure from Chevrolet. It shows that the GVWR for the vehicle in question as 10,000 lb. You said that the state law doesn't require a sticker if the GVWR is over 10k , I'm afraid the law wins in this case, unless your friend had the truck registered with 'truck' plates. If the pickup was registered as a 'vehicle' at the time, you might have a case...
