Battery Upgrade

Hey guys, I changed the battery in my 08 and now it won't even turn over. Is there something I am supposed to do, or something I overlooked? Thanks for any help.

Wow...

 

Was the battery charged upon purchase? Did you check the manufacturing date of the battery?

 

Put a multimeter across the battery, does it have/show any voltage?

 

I dunno --- i'd try a charger and see if the battery responds.

 

If everything is totally dead in the truck AND the batttery is showing signs of life via the multimeter --- Check your post connections well and other obvious stuff.

 

Although not terribly common, new batteries can be defective "out of the box" (bad cell, etc.). May have been dropped by the vendor and had a cell damaged etc..

 

The Yuasa motorcycle batteries had BIG issues some years back where quite a few were DOA....

 

Sorry I don't have any more specific suggestions.... just seems odd and smells like the battery has suffered infant mortality.

Are you getting any power at all, such as accessories when you turn the key. Check the battery for power. It should read about 12.8 volts if fully charged. Is there a place nearby that can do a load test on the battery to check for bad cells or if it can hold a charge.

I put an optima in it, I really like those batteries.

Everything is working in the truck, it just does nothing when you turn the key. I have tried jumping it, I guess I'll try charging it.

I would try to charge it first. If it won't start, take it back and get another.

 

Is there some kind of security light on, maybe it thinks you were gonna steal it and it locked up the truck.

After putting the old battery back in that I know is fine, I did see a message for service theft detterent, but that went away, but still nothing. Would gm actually make these trucks so you can't change your own battery?

Somewhere (here maybe) I've read there has been a high failure of the Optimas.

Wow! This is wierd. Did you look in your owners manual to see if it has anything about changing batteries? I'm sure glad my '99 isn't complicated.

Well, from what I can see they did make it harder to change out the battery, on my 2006 Silverado it was way easier to change the battery. They also made it harder to change out your light bulbs, good to know that if somebody tries to steal my headlamps or battery it is going to take them way longer than usual.

I also am going to change the battery soon, these AC Delco batteries are not really that good, I'll see how it goes when I change out my battery.

Yeah, my "6 year" AC Delco battery died about 2 weeks ago for no apparent reason. Wouldn't even take a jump and had to get it towed to the dealer. But I did get to test out the Onstar/Roadside assistance that I just had activated earlier that week. It sure did make the whole process rather easy. And the dealer did replace the battery under warranty. The new one has a higher CCA rating as well, so that's always nice.

 

But it's still an AC Delco battery of course, so I'll prob replace it in about a year or so with an Optima. I've always gone with the red tops in my other vehicles and they've been pretty solid.
