Transfer Case Oil Well?

This has the 4L80E plus 241 (I think) transfer case.

Two times now I have opened the fill plug only to have ATF run out.  I have also had to add ATF to the transmission.  Has anyone else had this problem?  My suspicions are either ATF going through a seal or going through a vent tube, which seems to be tied together on my truck.

Has anyone else had to deal with this?  What was the outcome?

Another question, are there any tricks to replacing the seal on the transfer case where the front driveshaft comes out of the TC?  Looks simple to me, that's why I am worried!

Thanks,

R.

Bad transmission tailshaft seal.

It's letting fluid through and it collects in the transfer case. it is not a hard job to change, but you have to remove the transfer case to get to it.

See a Chilton's manual on the specifics.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I think the NP241's as well as most New Process transfer cases use ATF anyway.  A tail seal MAY be bad, and leaking into the transfer case, but it's already got it, so it isn't harming anything (other than the trans being robbed of it).

At least your transfer case is well lubed.  :)
