4cly cooling

i recenly removed the stock steel fan/clutch, and put on a 16" electric fan with adjustable thermostat on my 98 sonoma 2.2L to get some more power, and it really did help a lot!!

anyway, im going to need to add another electric fan to keep things cool when the air is on, cause the truck gets a little hot(the needle gets to the 220 mark, and with the air off, it stays around 190), my radiator  is only 22" wide(the fins), and if i put one fan on one side, and another 16" fan on the other side, they will 'overlap' each other.they will be moving air the same way, but will this take away from the effectiveness of the fans? i dont know how to post a pic from my hard drive, but if you understand what im trying to do, your help you me appreciated, casue all my local auto stores dont know!

Generally, the electric fan should flow air through at least 70% of your radiator. If its 22 wide, with a 16 inch fan, that should be okay if its sealed up good with a shroud to force the air to pull through the radiator. Adding a pusher fan combined with the puller fan I don't think will make much of a difference if the puller fan is sealed to the backside of the radiator. (assuming the fan you have is a puller, which is much more efficient than a pusher fan)

If it is a pusher, see if it can be setup as a puller. Either way, be sure to have enough air flowing through the a/c condenser in front of the radiator when the a/c is on or it will blow an a/c hose out from the high pressure that situation creates.

If its running so hot that the fan is on all the time trying to keep up, thats not good. I would try to find a cooler thermostat to bring the overall temperature down, maybe a 180 or a 170 degree and be sure the radiator is flowing well and in good shape internally. Maybe backflush it by reversing the flow through it with pressure from a garden hose then refill it with 50/50 water and antifreeze.

If it was running cooler before the electric fan was added, then either the fan isn't moving enough air or it isn't shrouded properly. If its a pusher (in front of the radiator) see if you can set it up as a puller, which will move a lot more air through the radiator and you may not need a cooler thermostat, but it doesn't hurt to keep it running a bit cooler either way. Cooler engines last longer and make a little more power than if you are running on the verge of overheating. 220 is too high, assuming the gauge is close to accurate.

If anything, it should run the same temperature, or cooler than it did before changing to the electric fan, so its probably just an airflow issue. Does it seem cooler at 40-50mph and just run hotter when you sit and idle? What happens if you adjust the fan thermostat so its on all the time, or is it already doing that because of the temperature? If its hitting 220 and the fan is cycling on and off, you may have a bad fan thermostat or the temperature probe is not getting a good reading. Mine rarely, if ever comes on while driving and only if sitting at a light for more than 2 or 3 minutes it will cycle on for about 45 seconds and cool it right down, then shuts off. Set it up as a puller and seal it to the back of the radiator as best you can and go from there. If its already a puller, go with a lower temp (engine) thermostat and it should help out.

thanx for the help, but i figured out my delimma, but i found a higher cfm fan at my auto store, and i found  a  180 thermostat, cause i have the original 195. i just originally had not enough cooling air, but the fan i found has a lot higher cfm rating, plus its what i call an s-blade fan, so i shouldnt have any more problems
