Custom Grilleguard Revise

Well after lving with it for some time, I realized I don't like how the pointed design looks on the wrap around near the headlights. Plus both sides were slightly different and that bothered me as well. Just wish I had decided on this BEFORE having it LineX'd, cause now we have to grind off the LineX, cut the section out, fab new sections, weld those back on, then have it spot LineX'd which they tell me will be a pain in the arse without showing a seam.

 

Below is an illustration overtop of the current gg with said points with how I think it should look, with straight sections and a few bends, it matches the gg better now. Plus I've decided to add a few support arms as seen in the bottom photo to help the sides vibrate less. I've noticed the farthest sides shake slightly. We may also weld on a tab with the option of adding a bracket that would mount between the headlight to the frame.

I like your idea on the sides a lot. But, not sure that adding another support bracket is a good idea unless the vibration is really bad. I think it's too "busy" already and adding to it only makes it worse.

I hear ya, but most people, including myself seem to love that part in the front where several different tubes come together, busy but cool looking.

The sides will look much better but I am curious to see how the extra support arms works out. I'd hate to see you have to go with the tabs and frame approach. I just think that'll be weird.

I seriously doubt the added supports will help much, if at all, with the vibrating. It could even make it worse. The moment is still the same and you are adding mass to it.

 

The sides will look better, but enough to justify the added cost/effort? I don't think so. Then again, I really don't like it anyway (not that that matters to you though).

You won't see the support on the inside of the wrap around, it would be on the bottom tube part that wraps around near the headlight. You would see like 6 inches of a 2" x 3/16" plate.

Which will still look odd, IMO. I hope it all works out though.

It's justified, cause I hate the points enough at this point to remove the gg and leave it off, but with the money I've spent that would not be an option.

But your pinky is not attached to the overhung load with the same attachment point. Overhung loads are funny things. Mass/inertia have alot to do with it, and you are adding more mass in the same plane with the same attachment point/moment arm.

 

Try this first.....Clamp a support arm in place and see if it helps. I think you may be surprised.

Heck, the reduction in mass by trimming those corners back "might" help your vibration problem. I think it'll look better with the new corner profile. I always thought they came "back" to far past the lights, on the wrap-around...

redoing the sides will give it a better appearance but personally I think the whole thing in general is way to freakin huge for the truck. ever thought of building a full body guard like the guys do for their rock crawlers?
