changed oil update

Ok, after a 100 or so miles I just went out to check the oil level. The dipstick reads somewhere close to 1 qt overfilled! The last time I checked, the 5.7L's took 5 qts of oil. Am I wrong?  :)

Does anyone elses read like this for pre-Vortec years?

thanks

You are correct. The 5.7 liter engines did take only 5 quarts of oil. Maybe the service guy got mixed up with the new 5.3 liters that take 6 quarts. You need to drain the extra quart off, because excessive amounts of engine oil can damage your engine.

Stepside, I change the oil myself, I don't trust the boobs at the quickie places.

I only filled with 5 qts, that's the problem. Still baffled to why it reads overfilled.

Did you change the oil & filter or just the oil?  I didn't see in your post if you did both otherwise that could account for your being over.

I have a 97 Sub with the 5.7 Vortech, and it does the same thing. Change oil and filter, add 5 quarts, and bingo, its overfilled according to the dipstick (the one in the engine, not me).  I was going to post a question here about it, but you asked first.

Anyone with an idea? Wrong dipstick?

Im going to take a guess here..

The oil cooling system has quite a length of hose which probably holds close to a quart in capacity. Depending on how long you leave the oil filter off to let it all completely drain from the oil cooling system, you may be leaving close to a quart in those hoses, then filling it with 5 quarts, for a total of near 6 quarts. Check the part number on the dipstick to make sure it's the correct one for your engine.  I have had this this problem in the past on other GM engines that I bought new.  I would put in the correct amount of oil, and the stick would read wrong.  I just remarked the stick with an etcher and used the new mark. :)
