4.8 Engine Interchange

Customer has a 2002 silverado 1500 equipped with the 4.8 engine. Has 80,000 miles on it with bad rod know. He is wanting to rebuild the motor but I rather put a motor in it. My question is I found a few 10mile 1999 model 4.8 motors for a descent price but they say the interchange is only 1999. I was wondering what is different on these motors? If the longblock is the same I can change over whatever is different from the old motor. I would appreciate any help on this to save me from dealing with the hassle of a rebuild.

If memory serves me correctly, the design is still the same, the problem may stem from the mount points, location of accessories (pulleys) and fan setup....I think there were minor structural changes from 1999 on up.

I've heard that knock sensors and various other sensor locations are different between the years. Find you a boneyard that has the Hollander interchange system on their computer. It'll tell you want you need to know.
