Fuel Level

I have an '89 Silverado and my fuel gauge no longer works right.  My conclusion is that it is the floaty thing in the tank the tank that relays the level in there.  My question in does anyone know where it is, is it on the fuel pump and where can I get a replacement.  If anyone has any other ideas of what it could be please let me know.
