Engine identification number

I need any info. someone can give me to help decifer an engine identification number.  I'm really interested in the Duramax engine, but any GM engine will help.  I'm looking at some engines and TRYING to read the number.  The numbers and letters are written with a lot of dots.  My skills of connecting the dots has made out most of them.  :D

 

Are engine ID numbers only put on engines that have been installed in trucks?
