There are many threads about custom tuning. What I'm curious about is what parameters did you have changed and what effect did it have on your NBS with the AFE?

 

In other words did you have it tuned for max power, max fuel ecconomy, or somewhere in the middle? Are you tuned for 87, 89 or 93 octane gas? Did you elimanate the AFE, or have it stay engaged longer. Did you have 50% or all of the torque management removed? What did you acheive?

 

Did you have it Dyno tuned, or use a mail order like Wait4me. Did you have Justin collect data and tune from there, or did you use a hand held?

 

I don't want this to turn into a bashing party or my guy is better than your guy. Many owners want a tune, but have no idea what to change and what the effect of the change will be.

 

Let's use this thread to develop some real world data. Please share what worked and what didn't.

Good questions, I for one will be anxious to read what guys have to say about there tunes. I have reshearched past posts trying to compile a list to ask when I get my tune in less then two weeks now.... :D

If this thread stays on topic it will be very useful, especially before all the Blackbear tunes that are about to take place. I'm getting tuned in December and besides wanting it to stay in V4 mode longer, I don't know exactly what I want. I'm leaning toward a 93 octane high performance tune though, and a percentage of GM nannies removed. I would like to have ALL GM nannies removed when in Tow/Haul mode, if that's even possible.

I currently have a Nelson Tune, soon to be a BB tune (but keeping both).

 

My current tune has:

 

100% TM removed.

ALL Nannies removed (as far as I know).

AFM is untouched.

Tuned for 91+ octane (93 is hard to find around here).

Shift points at WOT raised to 6000 RPM

Shift firmness raised.

Downshift parameters adjusted for better response.

 

My opinion on AFM? Mine works fine, smooth and undetectable. But I bet it doesn't save me more than a cupful of gas per tank. I am debating whether to turn it off, leave it alone, or have it stay on longer. I will probably leave it alone since it doesn't bother me (leave well enough alone).

 

I plan to ask for the "Jenna Tune" (as she calls it :D ), which is a max perf tune, 91+ octane. I will follow Justin's recommendations for the T/H mode based on my towing needs.

 

Based on my experience from the Edge and the Nelson Tune, any MPG gains are minimal. But that may be due to the "fun factor" of having this beast unleashed.

 

My truck still barely does a burnout. I have been told that there is a throttle rate (not sure of the exact name) table that HP Tuners cannot access/change (not sure about EFI Live). I am hoping this is not true with EFI Live. It's still a pig out of the hole.

I agree with others... If this can stay on topic, I think this could be very useful information.

 

Right now, I'm using a DiabloSport Predator hand-held tuner. I thought it was supposed to come with 2 or 3 different tunes in it. But, apparently they only put a "HOT" tune in it for the Sierra Denalis. I really don't mind that, because I want all the performance I can reasonably get out of the truck. That leaves it up to me and my right foot how well it runs and what kind of mileage I get.

 

When I first put the Predator in, I wasn't overly impressed with it. It ran "better" but not "wow" better. I read up on data-logging, how to read those logs, and what to do with the info and I got more performance out of my truck... and, when I can keep my foot out of it, I get pretty good mileage, too ... well, for a truck.

 

I'll be getting a Blackbear Tune in December.. My plans for it sound pretty similar to what Jeff said. Performance tune. No nannies. Increase shift points a little. Increase shift firmness a little. Better down-shifting response. And whatever other recommendations Justin has.

 

I plan to have much better "burn out" results than Jeff mentioned, though.. :D

So what some of you are saying is that even with a "tune" you are still not able to spin the tires over? I was hoping the 6.0L with 4:10's and any empty bed go do that after it was tuned!

When I tuned mine it would peel out sick, on stock tune it would not spin the tires.

Thanks guys. This is what I and many others are looking for. I guess when I originally posted I called the Active Fuel Management AFE. For this I appologize, but many responders knew what I meant.

 

Lets keep it going. I know there are many many more who have had their trucks tuned. Let's hear from you.

I use the Tow - Haul button for my tune. Yup. Plain stock! :dunno:

 

I'm really impressed with this thread, and although my post is non-contributory and useless banter, I am very impressed with Jeff's post.

This is good information for those of us that may want to consider a tune.

 

I'd be interested in a tune IF it made the "out of the hole" performance better. Beyond about 20mph, my truck pulls pretty well but even with TM disabled, these trucks are dogs off of the line. I have my new gears to install this weekend, so I may be ready for a tune soon... IF it provides better bottom line power.

VMax2007, how does your truck perform with all of the TM removed (I guess in comparison to stock)? I was going to go with the typical 70-80% reduction, but if 100% reduction is manageable enough for regular ol' city driving I might have that done. Are there any issues in wet weather?

 

I'm supposedly waiting in line for a Black Bear tune, but I haven't received a specific date like it appears some of you have (well, at least to the month). I just told him to let me know when I'm up, so hopefully he put me down. :dunno:

Wet weather? Stabilitrak and TC still function normally. Not sure what you mean?

 

Well, let me put it this way, I put my stock modules back in for my upcoming trip to the dealer for the Washer fluid recall. It feels like I pulled a spark plug or 2 and stuffed a rag in the intake tube.

    • I know when I was looking around last year to see if someone handled Amsoil gear oil to buy at the retail level which of course means full price. I found an independent shop that works a lot on GM/Duramax pickups and they did not bring in the 75W-85 as they just stuck to the 75W-90 for the front and rear as a standard practice for the HD trucks which makes sense anyway for the higher hp/torque diesel and pulling heavy loads in four wheel drive. I haven't changed my diff oils yet but still plan on using the 75W-85 for the front diff as I highly doubt I will be beating on the truck and figured for my use type the bit thinner oil would be to my benefit for the winter for that slightly less drag. Very different weather here all winter vs northern Washington near the coast, that's for sure. 
    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.
