08 Silverado Steering Wheel Audio Controls "upgrade"

I just got off the phone with the dealership that I just purchased my 08' Silverado LT1 from and was advised that steering wheel audio controls could not be added because the "computer" would not support the functionality. I'am however, taking the vehicle in tomorrow for the DIC and remote start upgrade to be added. Has anyone added the factory steering wheel radio controls to a vehicle that was not originally not equipped? If so, was this a DIY or was it done by a dealer? I don't mind doing the install myself however, I'm a little nervous about removing the airbag due to an "EXPLOSIVE" past experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about the mod you're asking on the GMT900, but I'm sure one of these guys will chime-in soon

It's been done by many of us. Give me a few to find the thread. You have to swap the entire wheel but it only takes about 10 minutes to do. Don't pay the dealer to do it or for adding the DIC. Both of those are definite DIY's. While I track down the steering wheel link check out the loink in my sig to the DIC upgrade. It's WAY too easy to pay for.

I appreciate the quick response time, from fellow GM owners. It further reinforces my satisfaction of switching from Chrysler to GM (DODGE OWNER FOR OVER 15 YEARS). I reviewed the thread listed and will be soon ordering a new steering wheel. I to have the titanium / ebony steering wheel and look forward to going all black.
