i saw where reg 87 octane drpped to below 2$ yesterday; first time we saw that in a while. hope it stays down. ethanol was at 1.89 saturday at 1 station in Macon ga. yesterday. How many flex fuel trucks are yall using ethanol? why is it supposedly 105 octane? i know my milaege drops with ethanol though, although i dont see any performamce differences though

You'll probably see about a 30% drop in mileage with E-85 instead of gasoline. If you saw gasoline under $2 but E-85 was $1.89, the E-85 is not economical. You're better off buying the gasoline. If gas is $2/gallon, E-85 would have to be $1.40 to give you the same fuel cost per mile.

Just went below $2.20 south of Atlanta down I-85 where I live. Hope to see $2 soon.

$1.89 Indianapolis area

It was $2.10 at the Kroger in Powder Springs on my way to work this morning! Figures Indy is cheaper! The whole time I lived there it was cheaper in Atlanta, now that I'm living in Atlanta it's cheaper in Indy! What gives???

Are you sure you're talking about E85 and not 10% Ethanol? Any vehicle can run Ethanol up to 20%. (I've heard 30%, but the USDA or whoever says 20% now)

I know here in Iowa, E10 is 1.919 this morning. Regular gas (0% ethanol) was 2.019. I filled up with E85 on Saturday night for 1.539. My last mileage comparison was 13.5 or 14 mpg for regular fuel. If I behave, I can get 11 mpg with E85. (This is 100% city driving)

Regarding the 105 octane, I don't know a *reason* other than the fact that is just the way it is. I've done some reading recently and you need to know a lot about compression ratios and such to make the most of it.

why is it supposedly 105 octane?

The octane rating of a fuel is a measure of how well the fuel RESISTS detonation. It is a chemical property of the fuel. If one fuel resists detonation better than a second fuel, it is possible to be more agresssive with timing and compression ratio to tune the engine such that more power COULD be extracted, as the fuel has better resistance to pre-detonation (knock/ping). Again, nature of the fuel. IT is a physical characteristic. And, yes, E85 has better knock resistance than gasoline, in general.

Your mileage will drop with E85 because on a per-pound basis, gasoline contains more chemical energy than E85. Thus, if you're spraying the same mass of fuel in an engine, you will get less energy from the fuel's detontation with E85, than gasoline. Thus, to achieve the same power, you need more E85.

Not noticing a performance difference between the two fuels is more a function of the timing tables and tuning. In theory, a flex fuel engine COULD produce more power with E85 over Gasoline, all else being equal, assuming that the timing tables change enough to take advantage of the octane rating of the fuel. Whether they do this, or not, I am not too sure.

I DO know that various tuning houses are able to come up with pretty hot tunes for E85 vehicles. As this does NOT occur (apparently) on the stock E85 tunes, I have to believe that the timing tables remain relatively static, as going to a HIGHER octane fuel with a tune that is set-up for lower octane will NOT cause any major issues, except for lower power output than would otherwise be avialable.

Hope this helps.

Lucid, appropriate and correct. There is so little understanding about energy density that it is appalling. The whole alcohol issue is so misunderstood. The cost of producing it offsets the value-as-fuel gain!

I just filled up for 2.29/gallon for regular 87 E10 (just about every gas station in FL is 10% ethanol now, which sucks...)...It was amazing to see only 45 dollars to fill up from just over 1/4 tank...I was used to seeing 75-80 bucks.

Yo cry babies !

Here in Germany : gas fuel $ 6.55 / gallon ( annual peak was up 8.40 ! ! )

Now you again :uhoh:

I assume for a second that you're in the military. If so, do they still do POL coupons?

If not, you should feel GOOD every time ya fill up because you're paying at least 70% of that $6.55 in taxes to the socialist worker's paradise that is Germany. Just ask any of those social welfare clowns over there.

Of course, I shouldn't talk too loud here, as we will head that way soon enough, given yesterday's election results.

Frank, very unfortunately (wrong birth place) I am German, not American.

If I would be also US citizen, I would not be here anymore in Socialists paradise :-/

I agree with you 100 %.

You are right with the tax in Germany, on top on our income tax ( my is some

50 % ! ! ! ) we have to pay 50 - 70 % tax in the gas prices plus 19 % value added taxes on each stuff plus 300 kinds of other taxes...

Plus car tax - for the Duramax some $ 1,800 EACH year, for the Vette $ 800 / year...

In the summary, 2/3 to 3/4 of our income gets away to finance half Europe in and outside of Germany.

And all the lazy ******* which lay on sofa day by day, f*** their mom and do not work anything.

Healthcare and pensions system runs out of control and money..

it will be gone and I will get nothing when I get retired in 25 years,

even if I payed in tens of thousands bucks until then !

Don´t want to use more bad word´s, I agree with you.

We have narrow financial times here since 1989 as we "earned" the poor

Socalistic East Germany - wtf, now we are a big Red country in whole :(

Regarding the elections, I guess Obama will be the better man on this job, sorry

for you Reps that ole Veteran didn´t it in his 3rd (?) try..

GWB left too much scrap and a new beginning and change ( in mind also) is necessary.

Its now time for you over there also to do the mathematics better,

not to live every day as it would be the last day.

I mean it not personal, only about thoughts in general.

We had a lot of US forces over here in our area, I grew up with them and liked them.

Now the most are gone, to East Europe or f*** Iraq.

I have a half-american nephew, his father is still back in the states.

Anyway, no good times for V8´s ahead

Enjoy the GM steel as long we are allowed to it !

take care
